Don’t beat up the Backbeat

Checking the ol’ aggregator this morning, I was hit with this piece of what I thought was bad news, at least for me, from the Evil Genius Chronicles Clambake and Weblog. I thought, “After all Dave’s postings and spirited dialogues about ‘sticking it to the man’, he’s becoming the man.” Reading Dave’s admittedly well-written post made me think of “press release” material that permeates everything today.

But then, on my way to work, I listened to the Clambake Episode where Dave discusses the new arrangement. There is no substitute for the human voice; Dave’s excitement with the new arrangement, and his thought process in arriving at his decision to sign up with Backbeat Media to acquire new sponsorship for the Clambake, presented in two or three minutes what would have taken pages to express via text, if it could have been expressed textually at all. This is in spite of the fact that the “content” of both was the same. The human voice adds dimensions; we say that, we write about it; today it slapped me up the side of the head.

Rock on, Dave, and congratulations!

‘Nuff said.

Slipper Socks update

On reading the label on my new slipper socks, they are Acorn Slipper Socks. I discover that they have been worn by US Astronauts since 1982. Says it right there on the label. My particular model looks like these right here. And, per the website, and the label on the socks, they are actually on display at the National Air and Space Museum. I guess that makes me a blogging spaceman, or more likely, a spacey blogger.

Clothing misfire

As noted earlier, it’s a balmy 65o here. Thankskgiving night, a bone-shattering 19o. So that night, I ordered some nice wool socks, with the warm insulated feet, from QVC. Slipper socks, I think they’re called. Guess what arrived tonight?

Weather Wierdness

As I get home from another day of staring into the monitor, it’s 65o here, with flashes of lightning, light rain. There is a tornado watch in effect until 0100 tomorrow. Might have to tune the race scanner to the National Weather Service for a bit. If we don’t experience all 4 seasons of weather in a single day, like Kansas did over the weekend, I’ll call it good.

Prison Break Break

Well, I guess FOX considered last night’s Prison Break more than our old hearts could stand. Last night marked the “mid-Season Finale” episode. It returns in all its suspenseful glory in March, where it’ll doubtless be scheduled concurrently with an NCAA basketball game that I’ve gotta see. We will keep the Tivo armed and maintained.

Prison Break Monday

My pick for best new TV show of the season is Prison Break on FOX. I especially like that they typically show a rerun of last week’s episode in the 8-9 PM EST timeslot, prior to airing the current episode at 9 PM. They’re still selling ads, fans can catch up if they missed last week’s show, and it’s far better than some of the twaddle with which they could see fit to regale us.

Interweb Public Service Sunday

Well, I was all fired up earlier. I was prepared to offer incisive comments about PJM/OSM/Web 2.0/Tag Clouds/web.i.lic.i.o.us, but Scott, aka The Fat Guy, in far fewer, and much nicer words, sums it up nicely. And this little gem answers for me the “why do you do it?” question:

As far as monetizing this vanity website phenomenon goes, the best luck I’ve had so far is because of my writing about my crappy poker playing. And, because I love playing cards and chattering about it, I’ve met more people that I would genuinely call friends from the poker community than I ever have from any other online web-hippie endeavour.

And that is what makes this all great. Connections with real folks. Real people. Real friends.

A little ham (to break up the turkey diet), a little scotch, and then to bed. To work manana.

G’nite, all.

And I’m gridiron bound

With NASCAR being done for the year, and NCAA hoops not rolling steadily yet, all I got is the NFL. First, hats off to the Kansas City Chieves1, on their win today vs New England. Usually out of the picture by Halloween, the Chieves are giving us AFC West fans some good moments.
And, closer to home, the San Diego Chargers win it OT against the ‘Skins. I think Joe Gibbs is a great guy, upstanding, owner of 3 NASCAR teams and all that. The ‘Skins owner is of the spoiled-brat variety, and it’s good to see a former coach come back and hand Danny-boy his ass. Even in overtime.

1 – when you’ve been let down as much as I have by this team, it’s OK to call ‘em the Chieves.

Fum-BLE!

When I made last night’s post about Keith Jackson, I thought he had retired from broadcasting. In fact, I was pretty sure that I had heard his farewell broadcast, and I had. According to this, Keith came out of retirement to do a more limited schedule of games which generally involve teams from the west coast. Which explains why I hadn’t heard him in ages. It was great seeing him again, and the game between Stanford and Notre Dame last night was a real barnburner. I did however stay up too late.
