Don’t beat up the Backbeat

Checking the ol’ aggregator this morning, I was hit with this piece of what I thought was bad news, at least for me, from the Evil Genius Chronicles Clambake and Weblog. I thought, “After all Dave’s postings and spirited dialogues about ‘sticking it to the man’, he’s becoming the man.” Reading Dave’s admittedly well-written post made me think of “press release” material that permeates everything today.

But then, on my way to work, I listened to the Clambake Episode where Dave discusses the new arrangement. There is no substitute for the human voice; Dave’s excitement with the new arrangement, and his thought process in arriving at his decision to sign up with Backbeat Media to acquire new sponsorship for the Clambake, presented in two or three minutes what would have taken pages to express via text, if it could have been expressed textually at all. This is in spite of the fact that the “content” of both was the same. The human voice adds dimensions; we say that, we write about it; today it slapped me up the side of the head.

Rock on, Dave, and congratulations!

‘Nuff said.

  1. You know, it’s amazing how people in podcasting get this really guilty conscience when it comes to making a business decision, or taking money for soemthing. I chided him because he is the guy who said,”no such thing as selling out, just selling to cheap.” I agreed with the statement both then and now.

Don’t know about the other Dave’s podcast, but Coverville is good qualiy so Dave is in good company qualitywise. I really don’t see a parallel with Podshow model or the Aussie guy’s model.

If I ever here him charging for the amigo fish artwork to tatoo on my ass-then I’ll bust him for selling out!

  2. Ken, thanks.

BB, it’s not guilt about making money. As I say, I’ve been cash flow positive on the show for almost exactly one year now. It was concern that people would think I was a hypocrite for doing something that on the surface looks like what I’ve been railing about. I agree that this feels different, I will try to blog why I think that today.
