Good news

It was good news all around, after the travel travails of this morning. The truck driver was interviewed on the evening news; the fire actually started from a stuck brake or wheel, according to him; he saw it in his mirror, and thought it was a tailgater. After another look, he realized his rig was on fire, and as calmly as he could, got it off the road to an as-out-of-the-way-place as he could, and then ran away from it, shortly before the explosion.

What composure; who knows how many lives were spared because of his heads up response? And his comments at the end of his interview on NBC4, Washington DC:

Chew said that he’s thankful to be alive just one day before Thanksgiving.

“I think I need to go kiss my kids, mother, wife,” he said. “You never know when your life will be over in a split second while doing your job … just simply doing your job.”

Words for us all to live by, and act accordingly.

Travel Suckage #1

Today, at the start of rush hour, and on the busiest travel day of the year, a tanker carrying 8700 gallons of fuel has overturned on I-95, where the Capitol Beltway splits off. The fire is lighting the predawn sky as the load of fuel is allowed to burn off. I-95 south is closed, and will be for hours. I-95 north has been partially open, but appears to be closed now.

What amazes me, watching the TV coverage, is the use of those amber-colored road advisory boards. Advisories are being posted on these in Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, so that drivers can select alternate routes.

Fortunately, there are no fatalities nor injuries, as far as I’m aware now.

UPDATE: These state highway personnel, and the rescuers, do an amazing job.
I’d seen those amber-colored message boards used, generally for more localized notices. But, if you’re on I-95 southbound, north of the accident, I guess you are local to this, or will be soon.

The AmigoFisher Blog

The AmigoFish blogs as well. Check out The AmigoFisher for AmigoFishin’ bloggy-ness. And I didn’t mention it in the first post, but AmigoFish is by Dave Slusher1 of The Evil Genius Chronicles Weblog and Clambake Fame, who started this whole AmigoFishin’ expedition.

Trolling for Podcasts with the AmigoFish

Dave Slusher has announced the launch of AmigoFish, a service that lets you rate podcasts you listen to, and then returns the favor by suggesting additional podcasts you may like. This is no cheesy popularity contest “vote for your favorite and we’ll publish the results” kind of site.

I was fortunate enough to use AmigoFish before it was unleashed. It has steered me to several new(to me) podcasts I really like, and listen to regularly now.

It’s a ruby-on-rails, tricked-out, OPML-exporting-and-importing machine. Go set up your own account.

Happy Fishing, Amigo.

Follow all of the Sony Legal Action

I think I may have mentioned this earlier, but there’s a new blog to track all the legal actions being brought against Sony. The site is called, accurately enough, SonySuit.com. I wish the site had an RSS feed; if it’s there, Safari, FFX, and NNW can’t see it. A good source for updates on the ongoing legal battles; check it out.

No Sony for The Chair and Automan

James Slusher has some interesting views on Sony, and the boycotting thereof:

James mentions that he hasn’t bought an RIAA-label CD in years; I have bought precious few myself. I also use a Mac, having abolished MS Windows in my Y2K readiness plan. He goes on to say:

People are really upset that this big corporation turns out to be a soulless money vacuum. Who would have ever thought that might happen?

I think in this case Sony has crossed the line for even a soulless money vacuum by
1) The clandestine installation of insecure, poorly-written software, that they saw fit to cloak with a rootkit; some estimates are that this stuff has been installed on approximately 500000 networks around the world. CERT, and even DHS, have issued warnings and advisories.
2) Providing a patch to remove same; the patch contained as great or greater security risks than what they were trying to clean up.
3) Installing software that phones home to the Sony mothership when a CD is played, without adequate customer disclosure.
4) Possibly using some software licensed under the LPGL in their player.

And, then after a visit to Sony’s music site so he could see what he is foregoing, he offers this:

I figured that I won’t miss any of their artists. I haven’t missed them yet, have I?

I wholeheartedly agree. I do wonder, however why some legacy artists like Roy Acuff are on the list. Must be because of the new copyright laws passed a while back. I could live the rest of my life quite comfortably without any Sony BMG music.

And finally, James points out:

If we (as podcasters, listeners and consumers) do things right over the next few years, we can create a music business that rotates around more informed axes.

Right on! I’ve posted a lot about Sony, so that the few folks who stop by here might be better informed in the here and now. But we all press on towards the goals that James states above. And the day will come when Sony CDs will be used in 100% compliance with Sony’s draconian EULA, and that will be because no one is using any of them. A win-win.

Ford 400 – Final Fantasy Wrap-up

After tallying the lap bonus points, I finished yesterday’s race with 1082 points, good for 4th in my division of 100, and 559th out of 6931 overall. And for the last 18 races, I finished with a 1036.57 point average, 27th in the division, and 2495 overall. Yesterday’s race winner, from Wisconsin, finished with an astounding 1300 points, though not accomplishing the 1-8 finishing order trick. This team’s drivers finished 1-6, and 8-9, and got all but 5 of the possible number of bonus points. Truly a salute-worthy performance.

Tonight: Kansas Jayhawk Basketball, from the Maui Classic.
