Not Biting the Bullet

I was gonna bite the bullet, and upgrade to WordPress 2.0 (no relation to web 2.0) today. After downloading the upgrade instructions, backing up my database, and tarr’ing up my weblog directory, I decided to stop biting the bullet. Oh, I’m sure WP 2 is stable enough, but I’m not 100% comfortable with what I’ve got now, so I need do further tinkering and learning before upgrading. At my age, that gets more difficult to do.

Hey, but at least I’ve got a backup now.

Best Dessert Ever

SWMBO and I both know our way around a kitchen. When it comes to desserts, it’s generally up to me, until this year:

For the best dessert, not involving chocolate, that requires only thaw-and-eat preparation, I humbly present:

Yep, from QVC. Dress it with fresh seasonal fruit, chocolate sauce, whatever. It really stands well on its own; at least it has, through its half-life, which consists of last night and tonight at our house.

Mmmmmm….

UPDATE: Just ordered two more. They really are that good.

Tsunami+

One year ago, the most devastating disaster, natural or otherwise, hit our planet. At least in my lifetime.

I wasn’t blogging at the time, unless you count commenting on other folks’ blogs. So, from a year ago, this. The couple I mentioned on Dave’s weblog not only survived, but they’re the proud parents of a beautiful little baby girl, born November 19, if memory serves. I’d post a picture of little Abigail, but I’ve not asked Jackie and John for permission.

Trust me, though, she’s a real cutie.

Teach your (grand)Children Well

My 11 year-old grandson celebrated his birthday on November 22. His gift package from SWMBO and me included a Dale Earnhardt Jr racing hat.

During yesterday’s phone conversation, he said “Grandpa, I really like that hat. When I forget to comb my hair, I just put the hat on my head, and nobody can tell.”

Words like that make an old grandfather’s heart swell with pride. Not that I wear my hat for such a purpose. Of course not.

Random Christmas Notes

  • The roux is made, deep-dark chocolate color. The trinity1 is added. After the work of stirring that roux, we’re now on auto-pilot towards our chicken and andouille gumbo.
  • We’re on speakerphone with our daughter and grandkids, as they unwrap their presents. Even though it’s great to hear their voices, it is definitely not the same, nor as good as, being there.
  • It’s dreary and rainy here today. That’s 2 towards the trifecta of cold, dreary, and rainy.
  • Kathy’s comment on this post made our hearts glad.
  • I found some decent classical Christmas music on XM radio.

    Branch Blogging Office

In order to serve my readership in a better fashion, I’m proud to announce I’ve spared no expense in opening a branch office.

Not much of an office complex yet, but they did name a streets in a sane fashion.

    Just a spacey (spaced-out?) blogger.

Operation Eden: Merry Christmas From Pearlington

Check this out: Operation Eden: Merry Christmas From Pearlington.

We’ve all posted our Seasons Greetings on our blogs; we’ve left comments conveying best wishes on our friends’ blogs. This is right and proper. All of our mutual best wishes, heartfelt though they are, are rather meager compared to the joy and the good news in the piece herein linked. Read it. I’ll quote a small part:

This is a story the major media hasn’t picked up on yet, but it’s one you need to know about. If you’ve been feeling helpless in the face of all the destruction, as I must confess I have, this shows you one way you can help save lives, one way you can help rebuild lives. This movement is happening right now, in your own backyard, and it’s people like you that are behind it. They need your help.

If you’d like to join this movement, one house at a time, if you’d like to offer your support in any way, please contact Habitat For Humanity of Walton County at 850-835-0067, or visit www.waltoncountyhabitat.org

Check out the phone number or the link. One house at a time. One family at a time. One gift. One that keeps on giving. Do it. I plan to.

    Merry Christmas.

    And then there’s the Chieves

Chiefs remain alive, eliminate Chargers. From the article, here’s all that has to happen, playoff-wise:

The Chiefs have a chance to reach the playoffs for the second time since 1997 by beating Cincinnati at home next week, having the Chargers lose to Denver in their regular-season finale Saturday and then having Detroit beat Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey. That means, as stated here previously, “wait until next season”.

Still, it’s well past Halloween, and they aren’t out. Hope springs eternal.
