Accoutrements

No laptop is complete without accessories. I knew going in that my existing laptop bag would not accommodate this big hummer of a laptop. I also just determined that the one I think I want is at the upper end of the laptop bag price range.

I bought the 17-inch screen, because the voyager’s primary use will be around the house. A portable desktop, so to speak. But the voyager may at some time have a need to, well, take a voyage, and merits protection.

OK, one down. Then there are such items as:

  • An extra battery.
  • An extra AC power cord.
  • A mini USB 2 hub, all my existing ones being USB 1.
  • I’ll have to approach SWMBO, in her CFO role. I hope I’ve got another trip to the well coming.

    90 Days

The first post here was made on 10/30/2005. I’d promised myself I’d post something daily for the first 90 days. I missed 1/27; I had absolutely nothing to say. Maybe I had nothing to say on a lotta’ other days in there too, but I hit Publish in spite of it.

Whether or not it’s apparent to my small, loyal, and greatly appreciated circle of readers, I think my writing has improved a bit. I try to do more editing, cutting out unnecessary stuff, trying to make my point and get out.

I’ve thought about narrowing the focus here, to post about fewer topics. By nature, I’m a generalist, I like a something about a lot of things. The bloggers I read regularly fit that mold too, IMO.

So, thanks to all who’ve stopped by, and I’ll continue rolling on as I have. If all else fails, I’ve still got my Siderunners pre-release song. I would not have had that without this old blog.

And I will conquer the in-post graphics problem.

    Quicken Still Sucks

Paid two bills, one software crash, two payees that used to be paid electronically now get checks. One of SWMBOs lightly-used credit cards hadn’t been reconciled since Hector was a pup, according to this horseshit software.

I’ve said it here before, and I’ll say it again; this pathetic excuse for a financial management system will be gone from my life by the end of Q1. Even if it means a trip to Office Depot to buy some columnar pads. I bet they come in cool soothing pastel colors by now.

I have downloaded MoneyDance, and I’ll be putting it through its paces. But columnar pads are definitely a contender.

    transistr

Actually, final vowel droppage and all, I love the name transistr for the podcatcher soon to be known as “the podcatcher formerly known as iPodderX”. Sheesh, look at the current iPX icon. I’m trying hard not to cop a sour grapes attitude here, but I never had a transistor radio quite as cool as the one in the icon.

Looking at the current icon, I’ve gotta commend whoever came up with transistr for h(is|er) retro-hi-low-tech cleverness.

I’m looking forward to the new software, so I can get my podcast downloading and listening on something approaching an even keel again.

    Do no Evil

If this is what one, whether a person or a corporation, really believes, is it necessary to make a slogan of it? Or is it better to conduct oneself in keeping with the belief?

    Just askin’.

    XM Radio this week

From the weekly update, this airs Wednesday 2/1:

Willie Wednesday on The Bill Mack Show
    Open Road® – XM 171 – 2PM ET
The legendary Willie Nelson is back, sharing interesting comments about whatever’s on his mind, taking calls from the XM Nation® and delivering answers to every question.

I believe this is the legendary Bill Mack, of WBAP Dallas/Fort Worth fame. It’s been a lotta years, but I can remember the Bill Mack Open Road Show, generally when heading home after closing down a saloon. It’s great to remember a few things from one’s misspent youth.

And noticing the time this show airs, I need to look at ways to TiVo XM Radio.

    Posts with no Purpose

Maybe this characterizes all my posts; I don’t know. I’ve been wrangling in-post graphics placement from day one, and have noticed that the graphics line up better, or at least the way I intended, when such posts aren’t at the top of the page. I’ve defined two classes in my CSS, alignleft, and alignright, which helped greatly. However, the top of the graphic seems to be placed at a spot I can’t control.

So, anyhow, I’ll fire this post in, and note the effect, if any, that it has on my Kansas flag from the last post.

Bear with me, I’ll get there one day.

UPDATE: Hot Damn! I’ve got a boundary condition of some sort; or I could be really lame and always post non-graphic stuff right after graphical stuff.

    Ad Astra Per Aspera, 1861-2006

Happy Kansas Day. This post’s title is the Kansas motto; translated, it means To the stars through difficulties. On this day in 1861, Kansas was admitted to the Union.

I’ve lived in 5 states, and have no idea when any of the other 4 were admitted to the Union. I guess that’s because of all the places I’ve lived, I like Kansas the best.

The sight of rolling waves of wheat, stirred up by the always-on Kansas wind, is a breathtaking sight indeed, and one I really miss.
