I’d never heard of this before, but today 3/14, when written as 3.14, are the first three numbers in the infinite string of digits in the famous transcendental number known as π (pi).
Devotees of the observance point out that Pi Day is at peak at 1:59 PM, local time, so you have 3.14159. Being quick to spot a trend, I observe that at 26 seconds past 1:59, we could write 3.1415926. I’ll spare you the elaboration on fractional seconds, carried out to whatever level of precision you desire.
Since this is a holiday, what does one eat? We’re having ham, and oh, pie for dessert.
However you celebrate, drive safely, and give your loved ones a hug.

The chemistry teacher at my school celebrates it each year. Extra points for students who creatively exhibit/promote/demonstrate something involving 3.14etc. Of course, being a bachelor, it doesn’t hurt to bring him pi(e) either.
He also has a mole day. Guacamole is usually part of that celebration.
