Racin’ and Hoops

I’ve found something I’m worse at than Fantasy Racin’, and that’s basketball predictions. Kansas, punched out in round one, North Carolina in two, and Wichita State in three.

I’m bestowing my next NCAA tournament kiss of death on the LSU Tigers. An awesome team to watch, big, physical, and still graceful. Now that I’m rooting for them, I fear for their immediate collapse.

RIP, Buck Owens

Buck Owens, legendary country music star, star of Hee Haw, has passed away at age 76.

The Bakersfield Sound, different but still country, was one of his trademarks.

From the article, some of Buck’s observations:

Owens himself could be rebellious, choosing among other things to label what he did “American music” rather than country.

“I took a little heat,” he once said. “People asked me, `Isn’t country music good enough for you?’ ”

He also criticized the syrupy arrangements of some country singers, saying “assembly-line, robot music turns me off.”

Turns me off, too. RIP, Buck, and thanks for years of good music.

And the Winner is …

The World’s First iPod Video Film Festival is underway at The Flux. You register for an account, if you wish to vote. Or you can do what I did, and just watch a few of the entries. Three categories are included in the festival:

  • Indie Film.
  • Student Films.
  • Music Videos.
  • I watched 2 or 3 videos from each category, and I’m amazed at the creativity and production value that went into the short (5 minute or less) videos I sampled. Voting ends April 15. From the voting rules:

Vote for the films you like, and the ones you don’t like, on a scale of one to five. At the end of the first week of voting, our lowest ranking films will be eliminated. You may vote on each film once every day. Voting ends April 15th.

I’m not sure I like the “negative vote” policy, but the ones I saw were all winners in my book.

    Course Correction

Having spent today wrapped in a blanket and mostly sleeping, and with my up-and-down workload now taking an up trend, I have decided that I can’t make it to the Uplifter Carolina meeting this coming weekend.

I’m not particularly happy about that; I really wanted to be there amongst the first meetings. I also wanted to spend some more time with Dave and James. Heck, I was even planning to treat to dinner Saturday at a nice place.

Uplifting is a process, not a destination, so I’ll plan to be at some gathering, in another venue, real soon.

    Akismet

The Fat Guy has turned off Akismet Spam control on his blog, and reverted back to Spam Karma. Apparently, TFG has lots of spam cleanup to do, even using Akismet. Contrast that with Dave Slusher’s 99.8% success rate.

Pardon my interweb naivete, but I thought Akismet beats weblog comments against its database, and gives a thumbs up or down. If that’s the case, I’m amazed that two weblogs, both run by savvy operators, could experience such widely diverging results.

I’d been contemplating turning on Akismet here, but one false positive would represent a double-digit percentage of my readers, not to mention commenters. So, I’ll stick with my small-fry system for the time being.

    Kansas Lives!

The spirit of the Great Plains basketball rooters now resides on the shoulders of the Wichita State Shockers, victors over 2nd seeded Tennessee this afternoon. This earns Wichita a matchup with George Mason, another Cinderella prospect, next weekend.

And, while we’re spreading the good karma roundball atta’ boys, a salute to the Bradley Braves, victors over Pitt this afternoon. Root for who took ya’ out, that’s my motto.

    Racin’ Window

Marginal weather at Atlanta this weekend for the running of the Golden Corral 500. There’s supposedly a 2-3 hour no rain window behind the front currently passing through the Speedway area. NASCAR has the knack of getting the race run, even with iffy weather conditions.

If all else fails, NCAA hoops is an indoor sport, and will be an adequate backup event for today.
