Bizarre Enough to be True

KARK TV4, Little Rock reports that a doctor there has had patients’ records confiscated by “federal agents”. From the article:

Just over a week ago, agents with the Office of Inspector General served a search warrant on the office of pain specialist Dr. Brian Nichol.
Nichol`s patients, many of whom suffer from chronic pain, now say they cannot get adequate treatment without those records.

I don’t know what the “Office of Inspector General” is; in my experience, each agency has an IG. But whatever the source, it’s our feds at work all right:

Because the incident is still under investigation, federal agents are unable to comment about what they were looking for.

In absence of further details, I’d say they’re fishing with too big a net.

Black Car – Talladega – Victory Lane

Hats off to Martin Truex, Jr. on today’s victory in the Aarons 312 Busch Series race from Talladega. Truex drives for Dale Earnhardt, Inc., and sported the same black/silver/red paint scheme that Dale had when he drove in the Busch Series. A great finish to Dale Earnhardt Day!

St. Bernard Parish 3, FEMA 0

St. Bernard Parish was one the most Katrina-devastated parishes in Louisiana. MSNBC has an article about their efforts to rebound and rebuild.

Henry “Junior” Rodriguez, parish president, is leading the rebuilding effort from the kitchen table in his double-wide trailer. Tired of FEMA doubletalk, bureaucracy, and bumbling, the 12,000 of 67,000 residents who have returned are rebuilding the place themselves.

While other parishes waited for housing help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Rodriguez brokered a deal with a private source for 6,500 trailers. Empty lots were transformed into home fields.

Score one for St. Bernard!

Junior has some words regarding FEMA’s “help”, too:

Rodriguez scoffs at the notion of federal assistance.

“They haven’t given us anything,” he says. “They’ve loaned us money. I can get a loan at the bank.”

St. Bernard leads, 2-zip.

The parish schools are getting into the act, as well:

In addition to trailers, residents needed schools. Struggling to reopen them, the school board looked to FEMA.

“They couldn’t possibly do it till March,” says Wayne Warner, principal of St. Bernard Unified Schools, “and that was unacceptable.”

In November the parish opened a trailer campus around the hull of the high school. Seniors to preschoolers — they’re all here.

3-0, St. Bernard.

I love the independence and the energy of these folks. When it comes to a crisis, the only dependable ones are yourself and your community.

Am I missing Something Again?

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) has a Most Wanted Aliens list. How very FBI-ish. According to the website

ICE Most Wanted Criminal Aliens

The ICE Most Wanted Criminal Aliens list, first unveiled on May 14, 2003, features foreign nationals from around the globe who have been convicted of committing serious crimes in the United States and served their time. Each of these criminal aliens have been issued orders of removal, commonly referred to as deportation orders, but have eluded law enforcement, thereby posing a continuing threat to public safety.

Call me a simpleton, but what’s wrong with someone from ICE meeting them outside the gates of the Big House upon their release, and sending them back to the Motherland? Oh yeah, we couldn’t have a list that way.

Dale Earnhardt Day

Today, April 29, is Dale Earnhardt’s birthday. Also the 5th Annual Dale Earnhardt Day, where his legion of fans celebrate his life and times. From the DEI website:

MOORESVILLE , NC – Organizers at Dale Earnhardt, Inc. have confirmed that celebrations honoring the life and legacy of Dale Earnhardt will take place at Dale Earnhardt, Inc., on Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Dale Earnhardt will be honored and inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on April 27 in Talladega, Ala. The Busch Series race will be held on Dale’s birthday, April 29th. In honor of both events, this year’s theme will highlight Dale’s incredible track record at Talladega International Speedway.

Dale Earnhardt is the winningest driver at Talladega with 10 trips to Victory Lane during his illustrious career. His 76th, and final, victory occurred at the 2.66-mile superspeedway on October 15, 2000 when he roared from 17th to first in the final laps.

One of the activities at the observance includes this:

Record Your Favorite Dale Earnhardt Memory

Recall a special Dale Earnhardt moment and what it meant to you, on video. Your memory will then be added and archived in Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s historic, multi-media library.

This is a great thing; Joe Fan’s point of view, preserved for all time. Very cool.

It doesn’t say so here, but Dale Jr, will be driving a black Budweiser Chevrolet in tomorrow’s running of the Aaron’s 499 from Talladega. That will be a lump in the throat moment for this race fan.

Does that include a Free Car Wash?

In an attempt to show us that they want to score points with the electorate help with oil prices, Larry, Moe, Curly, and Shemp Sens. Charles Grassley of Iowa, Ted Stevens of Alaska, Pete Domenici of New Mexico and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania want to send us $100.00 to help out with our fuel purchases. Does this include a coupon for a free car wash? A $5.00 Domino’s Pizza? A coffee and donut from the On the Run? If so, you can still count me out.

Man, they’re really getting to the heart of the troubles here. Grassley wants to get Big Oil’s tax records:

And leaders of the Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday asked the Internal Revenue Service to let them examine the tax returns of the nation’s 15 largest oil and gas companies, as part of a “comprehensive review” of oil industry profits.

“I want to make sure the oil companies aren’t taking a speed pass by the tax man,” said Grassley, the committee’s chairman, in a written statement.

Good sound bite, Charles. Too bad for you; only Santorum is up for re-election in the fall.

Reskinned Again

I’m obliged to mention that site layout suckage referenced in my last post was not directed in any fashion against the current livery. It’s all me; I start with something decent, then via my efforts, it degenerates into something that doesn’t look so hot anymore. This theme may meet a similar fate.

I love the simplicity of this current style, and hopefully I can keep from messing it up too bad. I was actually looking for something like this when I first started this blog. tbbs-land now sports the veryplaintxt theme. WP2.0 and widget-ready, it is.
