Talladega Tragedy

Two race fans were electrocuted in a campground outside Talladega(AL) Superspeedway today. The men were putting up their flagpole when the wind toppled it into some powerlines.

From the article:

Donny Lynn Wright, 42, of Remlap and Keith Alan Stell, 39, of Birmingham died Monday, said track spokeswoman Kristi King. Talladega County Coroner Jerry Castleberry pronounced them dead at the scene.

RIP, Donny and Keith.

I’ll Sleep Safer Tonight

With the knowledge that US Customs and Border Protection has repelled the brazen efforts of former SI swimsuit model, May Andersen, to enter the U.S. OK, she was supposedly drunk on the plane and belted a flight attendant. From the article:

Andersen was seeking to enter the U.S. under the visa waiver program, which permits some visitors to enter without visas. His agency(Customs) on Monday determined that Andersen was “inadmissible” under that program.

I’m glad Customs is on top of this swimsuit model situation. Otherwise, in a few years, we could have millions of illegal swimsuit models running amok here in the U.S. of A. They’d be wearing all the swimsuits that our obese populace could only dream of. Sheesh, is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Let the Flinging Commence

Well, Congress is back from break, and there are plenty of things they think they need to do, what with gas prices, Iraq, immigration, etc., etc. Whatever the list of matters at hand, the scenario will play out as it always has: members of opposing parties will line up across the aisles and fling poo at each other, each side hoping more poo sticks to their opponent than to them. Then, equipped with sound bites, film and banners, they’ll all head home to Labor Day festivities, and demonstrate to their constituents all they’ve done for the country, and solicit votes in the November election. Then in the fall, the whole circus starts again.

There’s a better way, first mentioned here: the NI1 Party. A new broom sweeps clean; boot these bozos out come November.

Unbelievable

From The Agitator, a link to a Wall Street Journal article, behind the paywall, that makes this startling observation:

This spring, at least 65,000 undocumented immigrant students, many of whom have been in this country most of their lives, will graduate from high school. The Constitution guarantees a public-school K-12 education for every child in the U.S. But after that, their future is uncertain.

Whose Constitution? Looks like the venerable WSJ is just another BM1 rag.

Running the Table

A mighty tip of the racin’ hat to Kevin Harvick on his winning the Subway Fresh 500 Nextel Cup Series race in Phoenix on Saturday night. After seeing him win the Busch race on Friday night, this victory was doubly sweet. It’s always great when one’s favorite driver wins; it’s also something that doesn’t happen every weekend. Pardon me whilst I savor the moment…

In other highlights, my Fantasy Cup team finished with 1118 points, good for a 104th place finish out of 8553 teams, and 175 pit bonus points, redeemable for post-season schwag. I’m not bragging, but such performances are even rarer than Harvick winning. I know first-hand how easy it is to go from penthouse to outhouse, and could very well be in the latter come next weekend. So I’ll bask in the glow as long as I can.

And, my trades were for the better; Biffle and Nemechek combined for 183 points, while my Harvick/Earnhardt combination garnered 279 points. I always like when I trade up instead of down.

It could all vanish in a heartbeat next weekend on the high banks of Talladega; I’ll be the smilin’ racer in the meantime.

About time

From the Fantasy Racin’ folks:

SUBWAY Fresh 500
Results are as of lap 312 out of 312.
Current Points: 1093 Current Rank: 149

And this is before the lap bonus points. Oh, the places I’ll see. More on point, the tee shirts I’ll wear. Don’t make fun of me, here in my finest hour.

Frogstrangler

We’ve gone from sprinkles, to showers, to rain by the bucketful around here today. We needed it. And the rain makes one want to stay inside and sleep, and I’m never one to fight the feeling.

Fantasy Trades

Greg Biffle and Joe Nemechek out, Kevin Harvick and Dale Jr in. I hate to drop someone who is starting on the front row tonight (Biffle), but I need to shake something loose with this team.

The Subway Fresh 500 gets underway from Phoenix at 8PM EDT.

Cryin’ about my performance here on these pixels will commence about 11:30PM or thereabouts.

Avian Flu Fearmongering

I guess the BM1 has nothing better to do than spread worst-case FUD about a major avian flu outbreak here in the US. NBC is going the extra mile, devoting a whole hour to the subject tomorrow night2. Every time I hear of avian flu, I’m reminded of the swine flu of a generation ago. We were encouraged, if not outright begged, to get the vaccine. Many did; got sick. Many didn’t; nothing happened. The late Johnny Carson mentioned swine flu in a Carnac bit:

“Swine flu vaccine.”

“The only cure for which there is no known disease.”

Fine words.

1 – BM = Big Media. I like that better than MSM. It’s also descriptive of the media in other ways, if you get my drift.

2 – On Dateline. This time, no Chevy pickups will be harmed in the production – I think.
