Sad Day at Pimlico

Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner, and favorite in today’s running of the Preakness, pulled up lame shortly after the start of the race today.

NBC later reported that the horse suffered fractures above and below his right rear ankle, and is being taken to Pennsylvania for surgery. His racing career is definitely over, and there is concern for his survival prospects at this point.

I’ll confess to wiping away a few tears as they loaded him into the equine ambulance; he was still full of adrenaline, and wanting to run, hurt though he was. With a heart like that, I’m betting that he pulls through, and starts spending his time in the field with the ladies a little earlier than planned.

  1. I fell in love with Barbaro the first time I saw him. My husband and I were so depressed yesterday. We are praying that he makes it. He has the heart of a warrior and I expect to see his progeny do what fate did not allow.
I watched the race again last night and I know there was no one there that could have beaten him.
