XM Radio this Week

If it’s July 4th, it’s Picnic Time, with Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie, Billy Joe, and a magnificent cast of characters. A more detailed lineup in here. From the weekly mail-o-gram:

Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic
X Country® – XM 12
Tuesday, July 4 from Noon to Midnight ET

The 33rd Annual Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic returns to the Fort Worth Stockyards, July 4, 2006. XM on air hosts Jessie Scott and Eddie Kilroy in Ft. Worth, and co-anchors Ray Knight, Texas Fred, and JW in DC will take you live to the concert at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Artists that are scheduled to appear include Willie & Family, Kris Kristofferson, David Allan Coe, Ray Price, Billy Joe Shaver, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Leon Russell, Randy Rogers Band, Harmonic Tribe, Shooter Jennings and so many more.

SWMBO and I are visiting friends in WV on that day; I wonder if they would mind if I brought the XM Boombox along? I’d hate to miss tunage like that.

If you must, and if you think this is country, by all means listen and compare with the Picnic:

4th of July Fan Fair Flashback
Highway 16® – XM 16 – Monday, July 3 – 1AM ET – 9PM ET
We roll out an encore presentation of the exclusive performances from CMA Music Festival including Jo Dee Messina, Lee Ann Womack, Dierks Bentley, and many more.

You will see the light, I promise.

Up too Late on a School Night

I didn’t get to bed the same day I got up yesterday, but it was for a good cause. Memorial services were held for The Acidman in Savannah yesterday afternoon. For all those that couldn’t be there in person, there was an online celebration of Rob’s life. I wound up chewing the cyber fat in a chatroom with a bunch of Rob’s readers, commenters, and bloggers in their own right. In spite of the sadness of the event that brought us together, the conversation, though cyber, was lively, and the beers were both cold and within reach of my keyboard. Ahh, the beers.

I’m glad I participated; I haven’t been this sad at the death of someone I’d never met since Dale Earnhardt was killed.

Horseturds the Size of Rubies

My crufty old shell scripts are turning into ruby-powered wonders; not as fast as I’d like, but steadily progressing. I always have to resist the urge to make the finished product look like I’ve been coding Ruby for years; I’m aiming for the same functionality as the scripts I currently use, with an eye to backward compatibility.

To the credit of the book Programming Ruby The Pragmatic Programmer’s Guide, Second Edition, I don’t feel pressure to do everything the Ruby WayTM. Get it working, and polish later without breaking functionality, is my approach. This is is sharp contrast to Perl, where the Camel Book could take 15 lines of nicely indented, understandable code, and reduce it to one that looked like line noise. All in the name of doing things the Perl WayTM.

Functionality first, line noise later. From a guy who is used to doing things the Korn Shell WayTM.

Acidman’s Memorial Service

Rob’s brother Dave left a comment detailing the plans for Rob’s memorial service. The comment has been promoted to a full post. I’ll liberally quote therefrom:

This is Dave, Rob’s brother. I just wanted to let somebody know that the arrangements have finally been made. If somebody has the ability to get the word out, please go for it.There will be a memorial service for Rob at 4 pm on Thursday, June 29th, at Fox & Weeks on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah, followed by an after-service celebration (can’t be a wake if it’s after the Memorial) at our parents’ house. Pickers will bring instruments, everybody else bring voices and any Rob stories you can tell for everybody else to hear while they lift a glass to him. I’m going to miss my big brother, but I’ll do my best to send him off in style! There’ll be directions to the place at the service, or you can email me: dsmith [at] brannenlaw [dot] com. Thanks, everybody!

And for those unable to be there in the flesh:

Arrangements are also being worked out for a way for those of us on the web to participate in the memorial for Rob as well. Details will be available in the next 12 hours or so.

Looking forward to those plans. I have a decent amount of Rev. Craig’s 18-year-old variant, so I can appropriately drink to Rob’s memory.

RIP, Acidman

Rob Smith, aka the Acidman, has passed away, according to this post by his daughter.

I was a frequent reader, and sometimes commenter at Gut Rumbles. I didn’t always agree with him, and was sometimes grossed out by his posts. Through it all, he was genuine; what you read was what you got. Take it or leave it. He was also a true Southerner; I learned as much about the South and growing up there from Rob’s blog as I did anyplace. In fact, we had a brief exchange of emails here not too long ago, about Waffle House, of all things.

Thanks for the writing and the memories, Rob.

A Frank Zappa Moment

While rearranging the storage area here at Casa tbbs, I got a little too close to an exposed 2×4 in the area under the stairs. Not too sure I didn’t scrape my back on a protruding nail head, left there as a poor man’s hanger.

In any event, the first thing that crossed my mind was Weasels Ripped My Flesh. A real mother of invention, I am.

Siriusly Aiming

SWMBO and I took a test run at aiming the model SIR6 outside Sirius Radio Antenna this evening. We got a perfect signal, at exactly the place on the fence where she wanted the antenna placed. And yes, where she thought it should be placed is crucial.

So, between tomorrow’s forecasted thunderstorms, we should get this thing mounted and cabled up the way it should be.

Siderunners Sabbath

My patience has been rewarded. A visit to The Siderunners website reveals that their new CD, Sabbath Country Sabbath will be in stores on June 27. That’s next Tuesday. Hot Damn!

The album is described as a “live acoustic record”, which will be a change from the Ain’t Inventin’ the Wheel, which is raw, high-energy country at its best.

I’m sure the new one will be downloadable, or available for internet order, on the 27th as well. Look forward to a review right here in tbbs-land after I’ve had a chance to give it a listen.

Read about the album release parties, and be slightly envious of Chicagoans who can attend, here.

I borrowed the album graphic from the ‘runner’s site; I only hope rabid fans with blogs are allowed this indulgence.
