Having exceeded 1500 comments trapped as spam by Akismet, I have reactivated the plugin to close comments 21 days after the post date. I think that will help, being tired as I am of clicking “delete all” on the Akismet page in the WP dashboard, and being unwilling to let them auto-expire.

How do you do it? After my gloating that I didn’t get Akismet spam, I’ve caught 3 since I moved to my new host. But that’s nowhere near your 1500.
BTW, I’ve had the “close comments after 21 days” plugin enabled from the beginning. Not that it mattered much. :: rolls eyes ::
