Comment Adjustment

Having exceeded 1500 comments trapped as spam by Akismet, I have reactivated the plugin to close comments 21 days after the post date. I think that will help, being tired as I am of clicking “delete all” on the Akismet page in the WP dashboard, and being unwilling to let them auto-expire.

And this is Progress?

Modern life is an alphabet soup of acronyms and standards, at least when it comes to technology. We have SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS, Atom, POP, IMAP, etc., riding atop the venerable TCP/IP. The devices connect using RJ-45 or RJ-11 cabling, and everything interoperates. Almost. Need power with that? The devices usually are powered by an array of mutually incompatible “power packs”, or the cutely-named “power pills”, most of which render some number of outlets on a power strip unusable, because of the “pill’s” girth. And don’t get me started on the fact that most of the plugs on the device aren’t standard.

To date, the best that technology has to offer are the power strips with widely-separated plugs, to accommodate the various power packs. Then, you deal with the length of the wire from the power pack to the device, and your whole world revolves around either a glut or a deficiency of these wires, with the end result being that your device placement is totally out of your control. You place it where you can power it. Done deal.

What I’d propose is a standardization of the plug ends, so there are maybe 3 or 4 different types of plugs that a device could use. Then, with standard voltage outputs, one could easily purchase a transformer to output the correct voltage, to a standard plug. You could even buy “power patch cables” of a kind, in varying lengths, to enable you to place the device where you wanted. I can even visualize the day when modern houses have outputs such as I’ve just described on every AC outlet in the house. Man, how hard can this be?

This Father’s Day rant brought to you from tbbs-land, where your host has just lost a power pack to a device, after a weekend of much needed storage room defenestration.

Hooters and Bubbly

According to this, Hooters is going to pay FEMA for the $200.00 bottle of Dom Perignon champagne bought with Hurricane Katrina relief money at one of its restaurants.

This is a great example of good corporate citizenship, irrespective of the small amount of this particular incident. It’s not like Hooters hadn’t already done its part. From the article:

Following Katrina, Brooks sent one of his Hooters Air 737s loaded with supplies into the Gulf Coast disaster area. The restaurant chain also donated $225,000 to the Red Cross Katrina relief fund.

I had no idea that such a high dollar potable was available there. I never had occasion to look, believing as I do that the perfect beverage to accompany Hooters wings is a big schooner of ice-cold beer. And another.

Take Care of Yourself First

I don’t know why this is news, but members of Congress have voted themselves another pay raise. It’s actually an automatic cost-of-living raise, which Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, wanted the House to decline this year.

But no, the House held its head up high, and voted down Matheson’s amendment. Let’s hope that the voters will return a bunch of them back home come November, so they won’t see this raise in their checks.

Happy 20th Birthday, QVC

Dialing around the channels, I noticed that QVC is kicking off their 20th birthday bash. This means that SWMBO and I have been customers for nearly that long.

I think we still have some of the original items that constituted our first QVC purchase. They were a set of navy and beige bathroom towels, with duck figures woven into the terrycloth. We still have some left, because when we bought them, SWMBO delivered her explanation of the thinking behind the term show towels. I’ve been trained by the best.
