Did ya’ Ever?

Have you ever left work, tired, with a noticeable pain in your foot? A pain so severe your foot would hardly flex? That made you walk with a noticeable limp? And when you got home, did you take off your shoes and socks, to discover the big toe on one foot is noticeably larger than the one on the other foot? Did you put ice on the offending foot, and it felt a little better? And were you able to remember when this injury happened?

Me either.

GTD, Old Man Style

Dave Slusher has cracked the cover of his copy of Getting Things Done, after having the book for two years.

Like one of the commenters on Dave’s post, I’ve been following Lifehacker and 43 Folders for a while now. I also have been motivated to buy the book. SWMBO and I are off work this upcoming week, and in between the “Honey Do’s” on the list1, I hope to get some reading in.

I’m not sure how to read something that isn’t subtitled The Definitive Guide, but it’s high time I gave it a shot.

Thanks for the encouragement, Dave!

1 – The ol’ Honey-do list needs no GTD suggestions, being run as it is by SWMBO. She makes the list, I do the stuff thereon. Simple.

Chipper in West Virginia

West Virginia’s lone potato chip manufacturer is abandoning its low-fat frying recipe after objections from its customers. These customers’ objections translated to a 6% drop in sales.

And the money quote from the article:

But the new chip drew immediate reactions from customers who said if they wanted healthy, they wouldn’t be eating chips.

Very well put.

Good gravy, you can order a three-pound box of these chips for a measly $8.00 delivered. Wonder if they’d be good smothered in gravy? I may have to activate the tbbs-land test kitchen and try that out.

Get Well, Benny Parsons

Benny Parsons, NASCAR Winston Cup Champion in 1973, has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and will begin immediate treatment.

Benny is currently an analyst on NBC/TNT’s NASCAR coverage, and also hosts a racing-related show “Fast Talk with Benny Parsons”, on PRN Radio.

Amazingly, according to the article:

He plans to continue his duties with NBC/TNT and PRN throughout his treatment.

All my prayers and best wishes go out to Benny for successful treatment and recovery.

No Mas(s) Help

The Big Dig debacle continues, from 2 billion to 14+ billion, for a public works project benefitting the few at the expense of the most. Plagued with overruns, institutional incompetence, and huge slabs of concrete killing citizens, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney wants to make it right, again on the backs of the US taxpayer.

From this Boston Globe article:

Romney said state transportation officials haven’t begun to estimate the cost of the repair work, but he said he made a pitch for federal assistance in a meeting yesterday with Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry and US Representative Michael E. Capuano.

Followed by this:

“I’d be embarrassed if I didn’t always ask for federal money whenever I got the chance,“ Romney quipped, saying he had asked for help in paying for a comprehensive safety review of the Big Dig, for which the state has allocated $20 million.

He quipped? Nope, he wants his grubby ”Mitt“ in our pockets yet again. It is devoutly to be desired that our rollover Congress has the balls to vote down any further help for this project.

NBC wrap-up

The NBC Evening News with Brian Williams devoted several minutes of tonight’s show to big-stories-we-missed-while-we(NBC)-were-obsessing-on-Israel-and-Lebanon. In case you missed that, they mentioned:

  • The space shuttle Discovery landed safely in Florida.
  • Severe storms hit St. Louis; 500,000 without power.
  • Tsunamis hit Indonesia again; 20,000 homeless, 500+ dead.
  • An incredibly bloody week in Iraq.
  • Record-breaking heat sears the entire country.
  • There were others, but you get the idea.

Sheesh, I blogged about Discovery, Shelley Powers blogged about St. Louis (with pictures she took). The balance of the above were covered on NPR, as well as any number of news feeds to which one can subscribe.

The arrogance that NBC displayed in presuming they are the sole font of news is amazing.

    Finally Friday

It’s especially nice; a couple of hours from now, I get to pass the on-call pager to the next unfortunate schmoe highly-qualified admin in the rotation.

    Punchlines #6

More punchlines, sans stories, which are generally formulaic anyhow:

  • Now go to town, cowboy… “
  • ”First, let’s see how well you play that accordion.“
  • Well… the horse is blind and if he thought he was the only one pulling, he wouldn’t even try!”
  • ‘Get me my brown pants.’

    Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Had NBC, et. al., not bleeped out the Presidential expletive that slipped out at the recent G8 summit, would the FCC have fined them? I mean, this is the President saying “shit”, and the Justice Department says the President is always right.

    I’m confused.

    RIP, Robert (Bob) Brooks

Robert “Bob” Brooks, CEO of the Hooters restaurant chain, has passed away at age 69. I enjoy hot wings and a cold schooner as much as anyone, but I admire Hooters equally as much for being a great sponsor of NASCAR; they were the marquee sponsor on the championship NASCAR Winston Cup Ford piloted by the late Alan Kulwicki. Bob’s son died in the same plane crash that claimed Alan back on April 1, 1993. Alan Kulwicki was the last of a NASCAR breed, grass roots you may say, owning and driving his own car. Hooter’s sponsorship of that car certainly brought their brand into my awareness (and yes, I’m as NASCAR brand-loyal as they come).

Hooters currently is the major sponsor of the USAR Pro Cup, which is 21st century grass roots racing. The Pro Cup runs in smaller tracks around the South and Midwest, where racing actually happens on Saturday nights. So, Hooters is still involved in racing’s grass roots.

For all Bob has done to promote motor sports, I salute him. He will be sorely missed.
