First False Positive

For reasons not obvious to me, 4 non-spam comments got caught in The Akismet sludge trap today. So, after catching 1875 or so spams, I had to de-spam, rather than simply delete. A first for me, and a testimony to Akismet. That is around 1/4% on the false positive scale.

I’ll worry about the false positive number when my comment numbers hit a billion or so. I’ll contemplate the sun’s burning out in the interim.

Oh, and welcome back, PJ!

On Second Thought

TV off. I’ve got the latest rendering from everyone’s podcast buddy, Dave. I’m listening to same on my laptop as I type, and 5 minutes into the thing, I can see the purchase of another Michelle Malone album in my future. Specifically, the Sugarfoot album. Hot damn!

And, when you bring up her website to snag the URL for the blog post, the same song Dave just played starts up. Had me all confused for a minute. I thought maybe there was a snag in Dave’s recording/production apparatus there for a bit. Then came the dawn.

Update: On the road, in a hotel room, listening to a podcast, because everything on the teevee sucks. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Old Enough

I just stopped by a nearby WalMart to pick up a few sundry items. While there, I thought I’d better buy a couple of packs of smokes to tide me over. The clerk asked for my driver’s license, and recorded my birth date. It looks like WalMart’s policy is to card everyone for tobacco purchases. As though the world would end if an underage person bought cigarettes. I made the best of it, though; I suggested she look for the “Old enough to know better” button on the cash register.

Missed Hipster PAA Opportunity

On arriving in Raleigh last night, I checked MapQuest for directions from the hotel to Red Hat World Headquarters. Just to cover all the bases, I checked the return route. I copied and pasted both sets of directions into my Missing Sync for Palm OS, and dutifully synced them to the PDA.

This morning, I kept the PDA on the passenger seat, referring to it as needed. I had to hit the brakes a little suddenly at one intersection, and the PDA slid off the seat to the farthest corner of the passenger floorboards. I was probably a sight to see trying to retrieve it. I then thought how easy it would have been to transcribe the 7 or 8 step directions to the Hipster PAA, one set per side of one card, then put the card in the car’s cupholder, where it could be handy when needed.

It’s kind of a moot point now. Having tools is one thing; timely use of them is quite another. Oh, yeah, and the damn PDA slipped off the seat again on the trip back to the hotel.

Born in a Small Town

Clayton Cubitt, of Operation Eden fame, has a new post where he discusses to ongoing efforts to restore the Katrina-devastated town of Pearlington MS.

There is a project aptly called One House at a Time, whose charter is to help the people of Pearlington get back on their feet, with affordable housing.

Being a small town, kinda’ in the middle of nowhere, Pearlington doesn’t get the press, either good or bad, of New Orleans, Biloxi, and other larger places. They have very little voice and they are easier to ignore I guess because few people had heard of Pearlington from the git-go.

The last paragraph of the post hit me where I live:

As I write this winter is almost upon us in the Gulf. Did you know that the FEMA trailers people waited so long to get are being taken away in February? Will the citizens of Pearlington be back to living in tents then? Not if One House At A Time can help it, and you can help them. Like I said, Pearlington was never much to look at. It’s no New Orleans. It’s no Biloxi. But it’s a part of America that’s fading fast and deserves to survive. Because if you go far enough back, all our families come from some place like Pearlington.

I come from a small town myself; my parents and grandparents came from even smaller towns. As the year end approaches, SWMBO and I donate to a few mutually-agreed-upon worthwhile causes. This year, I think we’ll add One House at a Time to the list. Because small places like it do deserve to survive. Go read Clayton’s post. Maybe you’ll agree.

Road Bloggin’ again

Arrived in Raleigh safe and sound. A couple of cold beers, a plate of good BBQ, and I’m about ready to call it a night. The mighty rental Buick ran well, and I managed to boost its life-to-date mileage from 24.5 to 24.9, in one 320 mile trip.

Looking forward to a good week at Red Hat, and the homecoming Buick economy run later this week.

An Anatomic Dilemma

I saw this question on one of my blog reads earlier this week; I’ve forgotten where, or I’d provide a link. The question is especially timely during this political season:

How is it possible to get your foot in your mouth when you have your head up your ass?

Applicable in lots of non-political situations, also.
