Winding Down

A beautiful day, weather-wise (57 degrees, clear, sunny), for the carpet guys, who completed their carpet removal, installation, and clean-up in 3 hours flat.

And they were here early enough that I could have and should have humped everything out of the POD, and back into the house. As it happened, a too early beer break, followed by viewing a Kansas basketball game, derailed that idea. Plus, the weather tomorrow is a magnificent “wintry mix”, highs around 40; I guess I figure I need to suffer some more. So, tomorrow, the rest of the POD gets cleaned out, rain/shine/snow or pestilence.

It’s a great feeling, though, to know that no other contractors are scheduled to show up for a good while.

Pushing Buttons

If you happened through here in the last half-hour or 45 minutes, I’ve been pushing a lot of buttons in the WordPress Admin panel.

I’m trying out some new themes, not for this blog, but for a new blog for work. I’m perfectly happy with my blog.txt theme. First theme I haven’t managed to totally wreck. Maybe the only wreckage here is my lowly prose.

Anyhow, while I was at it, I pulled a lot of levers on the blog.txt theme here, and came across some new ideas that I may use here and in the workplace.

Sorry, the work blog is for internal work usage only. But I still want it to look good, even though most of its posts will be titled How to…, or Status Update on.., or even Recovering from ….

OK, now, back to your regularly scheduled blog drollery.

Bipartisan Fingers

OK, this SOTU is in the books, and I’ll rate it by the number of fingers I waved at the teevee and at whom during the proceedings. I have enough confidence in my readership to discern precisely which finger was waved.

Republicans: Michael Chertoff, Condoleeza Rice, Dick Cheney, John McKain.

Democrats: John Kerrey, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Chuck Shumer.

“Independents”: Joseph Lieberman, twice, or three times. How many times was he on camera? I sincerely hope I didn’t miss any opportunities.

All tied, 4-4-1. Such bipartisanship is rare.

Is there Ever gonna be a transistr?

Or did I miss the announcement? I’ve been checking transistr.com for nearly a year now, looking in vain for the re-skinned, re-branded iPodderX. Is this project now defunct?

I have to get back on the regular podcast listening bandwagon; our local NPR station has switched to an all-classical music format. I like classical music, but it’s not drive-time fare. And the local news station gets tedious after a bit.

If push comes to shove, I guess I’ll have to dust off the old iPodderX client, and get back into the swing of things.

SOTU Night

Getting ready to ass-up here for two hours of State of the Union speech watching. I don’t know exactly why; I fully expect that any good ideas put forth will never see the light of day, and the bad ones will really suck. Just like every one of these speeches I’ve seen, whether it be Dubya, Slick Will, George the 41st, or anyone before that at the podium.

I’m not expecting the forthrightness of Gerald Ford, who at least could admit “The State of the Union is not good.” I am, however, expecting statements that are more hallucinatory then visionary. Just like usual.

What is really exciting about this year’s SOTU is that now there’s a State of the Union Drinking Game.

Upgrade Delayed

The blessing and curse of shared hosting was just revealed to me. I host this old blog at Speakeasy, and have been pleased with their service and attention. Their pricing is reasonable, and probably about right for someone like me, who blogs as a hobby.

All the convenience of great customer service, and reasonable hosting rates, is paid for in non-monetary terms. I just found out that they aren’t at MySQL 4.0.0 or greater, and because the database servers are clustered, and serve many more customers besides me, that I can’t be immediately upgraded. I’d suspected as much, but now I know. I can’t have WordPress 2.1 yet.

So, tbbs remains at WP 2.0.7 for a while longer.

Another Half Day

Paint guy will be done, paid, and out of here tomorrow. And what a magnificent job he did. Carpet guy is scheduled for Saturday; we’d entertained moving that date up, but just decided to wait it out, so we can both get back to work, and return to some kind of normalcy.

So, paint guy done tomorrow, carpet guy on Saturday, and POD schlepping back in on Sunday. With the POD people to pick up the emptied-out pod the following Monday.

Escalating Home Improvement Costs

SWMBO has already been on the phone to her best girlfriend, wherein the “accessories” purchases for our newly freshened up place have been mentioned.

I could hear the “WooHoo! Shopping with someone else’s money” on the other end of the line.

I’m afraid; I either budgeted way too much, or not nearly enough. Only time will tell. SWMBO and friend, however, have something I can only dream about: taste and class. It’s gonna look great.
