Kicked to the Curb

Goodbye Speakeasy. My first webhost. Like one’s first date, first kiss, first more-than-a-kiss, and first beer, one’s first webhost will always have a special place in an old geek’s heart.

Hello, Host My Site. As suspicious as I am of places named verb-MY-noun, your signup process has been efficient, your services more than sufficient, and your support right on top of things. I look forward to a long and happy association. Or until my one year’s agreement expires. ;)

Trendy Vittles Shopping

Today, I made my first visit to Trader Joe’s. There’s one a mile from our house, and SWMBO brings stuff home all the time.

It was my day to visit, drawn as I was by $4.99 per pound green peppercorn and garlic pork loin.

What a store. I felt decidedly out of place amongst the SUV-driving, ski-jacket wearing yuppie type-Aers and their bratty, self-centered little kids. I guess there’s something about a sign that blares out ORGANIC that enhances that type of predisposition. And such signage abounds at TJ’s. But I, clad in my Kevin Harvick NASCAR attire, navigated aisles that don’t run straight, looking at foodstuffs that compel one to read the label to ascertain what they even were. The yuppies excel at that kind of behavior, too, careening their carts around in a manner similar to their driving skills, snatching items off the shelf, suddenly stopping, to read labels.

I decided to play it safe, and only buy items that I could identify from a distance. And I did pretty well with that strategy. Except maybe with the Pad Thai noodles. The jury’s out on that one.

But tonight is pork tenderloin night, and that stuff looks like it’s gonna be plumb larrupin’.

Blinded

My yet-to-be-installed-or-ordered Linux Test Lab had been reduced to a single node for the time being.

SWMBO and friend visited Next Day Blinds, in search of new vertical blinds for the newly spiffied up tbbs-land World HQ, Control Center, and teevee room. Let me explain that WorldHQ has sliding glass doors going out to the patio, and the room opens to the second level of the house above. There are two patio-door-length windows there on the second level, also in need of treatment. Let’s just say that the down payment on these vertical binds would have bought a better Linux Test Lab than I envisioned in the first place. Not to mention the fact that SWMBO and friend have captured the #1 position in the post-home-improvement expenditures. I’ll gladly surrender the position.

The Next Day Blinds guy will be here to measure in a half-hour.

Doubly Blessed

This morning, there was something to be flushed from the Akismet spam trap, indicating that my recent move has been a success.

Inadvertently tagged in the ordeal was PJ, who was retrieved with one click, and now has the distinct and timeless honor of being the first commenter here at my new digs.

w00t!

Oh, and incoming links weren’t borked for long enough for me to lose my spot in The Technorati Top One Billion.

Your Regularly Scheduled Drollery

In all the hubbub and hand-wringing about moving the blog, I neglected to mention by best ever performance in my Fantasy Racing League last weekend.

My humble race team is #1 in my league. Granted, the leagues are smaller this year, 25 teams each. What I’m most tickled about is I’m #49 nationally.

Let me savor the moment; for this weekend I may fall.

To California Speedway this weekend.

Over the Hump

I have yet to flush the first spammer from the Akismet trap here in my new digs, but incoming links were hosed in the tank, due to my own inexperience ignorance when I set this blog up over a year ago.

Thanks to help from Dave, and a little further tweaking with the help of my new host and The Google, I think things are stable, and behave as they should.

I’m still concerned about feeds; I think I got ‘em all fixed, but I’m not sure. So, if you’re reading this via a feed that is still borked, you’ll never know. But herein lies the advantage of a small potato blog with a small but loyal readership like I have; if you don’t hear from me for a few days, you’ll actually stop by, knock on the door, and see what’s up. At least I keep telling myself that.

And the first flushing of the Akismet sludge filter will be proof that things are back to normal.

Tomorrow, sweeping the floor and turning out the lights at my old host, followed by the WP 2.1.1 upgrade.

Search for America Tour, 2007

It looks like it’s back to Arkansaw for SWMBO and me in early May. Elder Daughter will be there, too, to see her Grandma. Kinda sad, in lots of ways; SWMBO’s mom is fading perceptibly. So I’m glad we can all get together again.

Buick mileage totals will follow; the no-fly streak continues for me.

I used the Samuel Clemens spelling of our destination; probably the most literary thing I’ve done in a week or two.

Delaware Bound?

I’m probably as tired of writing about this, as y’all are tired of reading, presuming you still in fact are reading, but finally, if it’s not another train, light at the end of the hosting tunnel:

We actually have a lot of options for the WordPress blog, (it comes as an included add on, on any of the shared hosting accounts and we also offer it as stand alone product, but both of these are FTP access only) since you would like to use SSH with the account, I would recommend getting the Linux Builder plan, this comes with SSH right off the bat. There is not something else you’ll need to configure or fax in, once you get the setup email, you can begin to SSH right in with the login.

Little old me, a Linux Builder.

Heaven… I’m in heaven.

From the fine folks at Host my site. Maybe my long nightmare is over. Time will tell.

I Won’t even Tell Ya

But this is a blog, and we tell all. I attempted to sign up with yet another provider this afternoon. Keyed in the info, went to “checkout”, and their friggin’ payment processing was on the fritz.

I contacted them via email, and said that we’d probably already gotten off on the wrong foot. Just ignore the transaction, etc. I got a nice response back from them, from a real person even, and I replied to that, saying I’d give them another shot, if they could answer the following to my satisfaction:

Whether I ultimately go with your company or not depends on your answer to this question:

What is entailed in establishing ssh access to my site?

Man, Speakeasy, and the relative chaotic confines of my workplace are lookin’ damn good now.
