The Duke

John Wayne would have turned 100 on May 26. Turner Classic Movies is showing bunches of the Duke’s movies this week. It looks like the marathons have the Westerns, the war movies, and the action movies all grouped into convenient blocks.

Gentlemen, set your Tivos.

Diddley out of ICU

Bo Diddley is being transferred from intensive care and into a regular room at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

He had been in ICU since suffering a stroke on May 13.

This is good news indeed. Faith Fusillo, his business manager, reports:

“I was able to speak with him by phone this morning,” Fusillo said. “He wanted to know where his stuff was: his guitar and the money from the gig. I was so happy because this is the Bo that I know and love, and a real indication that Bo is on his way back.”

Excellent!

Podcasting Comes to QVC

I’m watching QVC as a household duty avoidance mechanism while SWMBO is at the store; they were selling a pretty nice little MP3 player with 2GB internal memory, and an SD slot expansion.

What struck me as funny about the presentation was this little snippet from show host Bob Bowersox, quoted as accurately as I can recall it:

A lot of kids today are downloading blogs, and what do they call ‘em? Ummm, podcasts. Anyone can make a podcast today, and a lot of people listen to them.

Indeed.

And yep, I tipped over for one of the MP3 players, too.

Millesimus Primus

This self-referential post marks post number 1001 here at tbbs-land. I think it fitting that the 1000th announced the blimp. I guess it’s incumbent to cite statistics on milestone events; from the WP Dashboard:

On to the next 1000, and y’all come back now, ya hear?

The tbbs Blimp

Some bloggers post cat pictures. Some bloggers post video clips. Some bloggers podcast. Some bloggers post recipes.

Here at tbbs-land, we have our own blimp, pictured to the right. I’d just arrived home from work the other night, when I saw this heading toward Dulles airport. I have no clue whose blimp it was, I didn’t have the angle to get a side view. But I had the trusty Razr, and snapped this pic. I think this was my first sighting of a blimp in the wild.

So, don’t be surprised if you are watching the Rose Bowl next January, and hear

Today’s aerial coverage provided by the tbbs blimp Monarch.

How ’bout that Curlin? By a head, the winner of this year’s Preakness. He survived a stumble at the start, his jockey survived having to bail off a horse in an earlier race, and ran down Street Sense in the final lengths of the Preakness.

If you’d followed my advice in the previous post, you’d have $8.80 in your pocket, for every $2 you bet.

I hope my automotive picks for this evening are as good.

Mortal Locks

Today is another great day of racing, whether it involves horseflesh or the roar of 850 HP engines. The Preakness, followed by the Nextel All-Star Challenge. Here are my picks for the events; feel free to call your investment advisor bookie and invest a few bucks.1

Preakness Stakes2: Curlin’

Nextel All-Star Challenge Open: Clint Bowyer

Nextel All-Star Challenge: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

2 Yes, I’ll probably get choked up remembering Barbaro.

NASCAR HotPass Lineup

I had incorrectly assumed that there would be no HotPass coverage for tonight’s running of The Nextel All-Star Challenge1 from Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. But a quick check of the Tivo TV Guide reveals the following:

  • 795 – Kurt Busch (#2)
  • 796 – Kevin Harvick (#29)
  • 797 – Tony Stewart (#20)
  • 798 – Jimmie Johnson (#48)
  • 799 – Dale Earnhardt Jr (#8)2

Let’s see: no points awarded, a million bucks on the line, night racing on the ragged edge, and 5 of the sport’s best on HotPass.

I think I’ll take it in.

2 Surprise, surprise.

The Dust is Clearing

tbbs-Land, never one to shy away from an upgrade, is now proudly powered by WordPress 2.2. Don’t activate the sidebar widget plugin, if you saved it from the earlier version; widget functionality is now part of the WP core.

Other than that, a little dust, some widget shuffling, and I’m back with y’all.

Thanks, WordPress!
