The new laptop, gypsy, is an absolute hoot to use. I took it for its initial road shakedown on the last Search for America Tour a month back. I also took the trusty Mac Powerbook, since I knew its capabilities and functionality. Hauling two laptops being a huge PITA and all, I resolved to condense the laptop cartage on future road trips to a single unit, and have been working to outfit gypsy to fit the bill.
So I needed some things that I’ve used on the Mac from the git-go:
- Web browser
- Mail client
- Feed reader
- Blog authoring client
- Wifi reliability
Some of these are obvious no-brainers, others had choices; here’s what I’m running now:
- Web browser - Firefox
- Mail client - Thunderbird (curently migrating from Evolution)1
- Feed Reader - Sage extension for Firefox. Used at work; it rocks.
- Blog client - Performancing, now ScribeFire Firefox Extension.
- Wifi - Previously chronicled the success of the built in wifi, also have an old D-link USB wifi adapter that works.
In addition, I went with a Sprint wireless broadband adapter, which is cool enough to warrant its own post, and which will provide me blog fodder for my next blogging dry spell.
