NASCAR HotPass Lineup

For today’s running of the Dodge Dealers 400, we have the following Chasers- channel/driver/car:

795 – Carl Edwards, #99
796 – Clint Bowyer, #07
797 – Jeff Gordon, #24
798 – Denny Hamlin, #11
799 – Jeff Burton, #31

The second race in the Chase. Try to catch a few laps, even if it’s interspersed with gridiron activity, OK?

UPDATE: The race is being held at Dover DE. I unaccountably omitted the venue.

Prepping for WP 2.3

WordPress 2.3 is supposed to be released early next week. tbbs-land has always been an early adopter of new WP releases. I’ve even changed hosting companies to keep my WP install current. And I plan to upgrade as soon as I can get my hands on the software.

So today I’m reading up on plugin compatibility, new features of 2.3, and tidying up my WordPress directory at my hosting company.

“If we fail to prepare, we prepare to fail.”

Not Converging 07

Well, beans. I have been wanting to attend Converge South for the last two times, after reading about the 2005 festivities at Dave’s place. Converge 2007 takes place October 19-20 in Greensboro NC.

There have always been interesting presentations at Converge South, I love the Carolinas, and CS seems to be devoid of the haughty snootiness that oftentimes graces other web conferences. Even a poor schlub like me would, I think, be welcome.

This year, SWMBO and I will be heading to Martinsville VA, for the NASCAR Nextel Cup race on that weekend. So yet again, I’ll have to follow the proceedings via the weblogs.

There’s always ’08.

Autumnal Pismires

With the cooling down of days and nights, the first pismires of the fall are seeking refuge in my shabby cubicle1 at work. These are doubtless the descendants of the vernal pismires who staged an invasion last April.

So, before leaving work tonight, I put out a fresh batch of pismire traps hotels, and wiped down the surface of my desk with Clorox Lemon-scented anti-bacterial wipes.

We’ll see what the situation is on Monday. In the meantime, I’m getting a leg up on flu season sanitizing.

1 Of all the shabby cubicles I’ve had, this one is the shabbiest.

Raleigh Bound, Again

The first week in October should find me in Raleigh yet again, for more book learnin’ at the Red Hat Mothership. Hopefully, I’ll walk off with my RHCE1 certification. The exam is supposed to be a grueling affair. I really want this certification, not that having it will make me a better sysadmin, or not having it will make me any worse. And it matters not that people more dense than I have their RHCE, nor that people much sharper than I didn’t make it. It’s just something I’ve wanted to accomplish since I got my first Red Hat certification almost a year ago.

So off I go, notebooks and laptop in backpack, to learn some more.

To quote my high school American History teacher, “To thine own self be true.” I think he was quoting Shakespeare, but I still remember the statement.

A Salute to a Kansan

Clint Bowyer, from Emporia KS, has just won his first NASCAR Nextel Cup race, dominating the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway.

He lead the most laps, won the pole, and was totally uncatchable on the afternoon. He’s in the Chase for the Nextel Cup, the only winless one in the fraternity. Until today. The detractors can now back off.

I’m tickled for the guy; a Kansas guy, racing in the big leagues for Richard Childress Racing, in the Chase, and winning. And with DirecTV and Jack Daniels as sponsors.

It doesn’t get any better than that.

A Fitting Tribute

Chief Zee, the Washington Redskins’ mascot for the last 29 years, was absent from last Sunday’s FedEx Field season opener. He was in Dallas, at Texas Stadium, home of the arch rival Dallas Cowboys. It was for a good and noble cause, though:

Turns out he was in enemy territory — Texas Stadium — to honor the godfather of superfans, Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones. Crazy Ray died in March after 44 years of rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, and Chief Zee escorted Jones’s widow onto the field in Sunday’s pregame ceremony. It was only the second time in 29 years that the Chief missed a Redskins home game; the last was in 1981, when his father died. “The only thing that would keep me away was the death of my father or Crazy Ray,” he told us yesterday. “We became like brothers.”

Had I been watching the Dallas game, I’d have gotten choked up for sure at seeing the ceremony.

NASCAR HotPass Lineup

The Chase is on; today’s lineup is 100% chasers; probably a good thing. Anyhow, here’s how the channels align for today’s running of the Sylvania 300 from New Hampshire International Speedway:

795 – Matt Kenseth, #17
796 – Kevin Harvick, #29
797 – Tony Stewart, #20
798 – Denny Hamlin, #11
799 – Jeff Burton, #31

And, you can buy HotPass for the remaining 10 races for $19.99, in case you want to be up close and personal for the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Two bucks a race; not a bad deal.

Yooniversity of Nebraska Football

At 8PM EDT tonight on ABC, the Nebraska Cornhuskers face off against the #1 ranked USC Trojans, in a night game from Memorial Stadium in Lincoln NE.

I had the good fortune to be in the stands for the first night game in Lincoln, 20+ years ago. The opponent that night was Florida State; the Big Red prevailed. I was impressed by the fortress-like qualities of Memorial Stadium; steel, concrete, tough; probably built in the WPA days, or some timeframe close to that. Look elsewhere for stadia with theater seating. Look elsewhere for watercress and mung bean sandwiches, chablis, and other trappings. This is a bratwurst, sausage, and beer place.1

The Nebraska fans are loyal, and aren’t above not-too-friendly ribbing of the opponent. That’s proper. They are also hospitable, friendly, and even though they might hate to admit it, they realize at some level that football is just a game.

I could make several posts about that weekend so many years ago. And maybe I shall. For now, I’ll say only two things:

  1. We were assured that the lighted “N” on the outside of Memorial Stadium stands for “knowledge”.
  2. I could live well and prosper in a community like Lincoln Nebraska.

For tonight: Go Big Red!

Ubuntu Ubiquitous

I’m seeing all kinds of articles on Ubuntu in my feedreader here of late. I’ve used it only lightly, as I detailed here, and have generally been pleased with it. It runs well on our group aging POS Dell laptop at work, where we use it mainly for minicom and serial terminal kinds of applications. It’s responsive, the desktop is good-looking, and OSX like, you sudo to root to do potentially devastating things on the system. If we weren’t a Red Hat shop, I’d spend a lot more time learning its finer points.

One article in the reader grabbed my attention today; it was titled Ubuntu World Domination in Progress, which was generally supportive, somewhat tongue-in-cheek in tone, and contained the following priceless quote regarding the nearly evangelistic fervor of the Ubuntu faithful:

Think Jehova’s Witnesses in brown and orange suits knocking on your door on a Sunday morning, glaring at you with a psychotic smile, offering you the good book (and free live cd) of Ubuntuness. Chapter 1 verse 4; Thou shalt use gksudo with graphical apps.
