George Orwell Bush

Daily, I read all kinds of screaming negative headlines about Dubya, oftentimes on stories with no links to any source which may corroborate the allegations. I’m not a Bush fanboy by any stretch; he will certainly be historically noted in the bottom five of all US Presidents. But, some of the blog posts, some of the florid-faced, veins-sticking-out-on-the-side-of-the-head comments about him are over the top. So, I compromise my sodium intake with a few grains of salt for those.

Sometimes, such articles are correct. And such was the case today, after following a screaming headline1 and following the link, that I was presented with this speech transcript, which President Bush delivered at the Department of Housing and Urban Development on June 18, 2002. In the transcript, which I presume to be dutifully recorded and accurately transcribed for the internet, he said (emphasis mine):

I want to thank the choir for coming, the youngsters for being here. I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we’re really talking about peace. We want there to be peace. We want people to live in peace all around the world. I mean, our vision for peace extends beyond America.

Having read the Orwell classics, I never thought I’d live so long that I’d actually be watching the book play out in front of me.
