Tanked Upgrade

My attempt to upgrade to WordPress 2.5 didn’t fare so well. Everything was peachy until it was time to run upgrade.php, which simply exited. No messages. No errors. No signs of success. Bupkis. Subsequent attempts to get to the admin panel were redirected to upgrade.php, with the same disastrous results.

Thank heavens for backups. We’re now rolled back to 2.3.3 here, but stubborn enough to wrestle that steer yet again tomorrow.

Live Siderunnin’

Nearly a year has passed since the kick-ass alt.country group1 The Siderunners played their final show. Today, I was tickled to learn via the Evil Genius Chronicles that the Siderunners are making MP3s of their final live shows available for free download.

I became a huge Siderunners fan after hearing them on several EGC Clambakes, and I’ve blogged about them many times right here. I even received some comments from the band members. One of the highlights of my blogging life was when the ‘Runners e-mailed me a few MP3s of some unreleased songs, while I not so patiently awaited the release of their last CD.

Thanks for the memories, Siderunners. And for the release of the final tour shows.

1 alt.country is now the real country, to distinguish the genre from what is called country music on FM radio

Cinderella Still Dances

As Davidson wins over Wisconsin, 73-56, and I prepare to watch the KU Jayhawks 40 minutes hence, a note to KU: don’t look past Villanova tonight. Do what got you to the dance, then immediately start looking at the Wildcats from Davidson. They are good.1

1 Lots of teams named Wildcats

More Hoops

Ahh, what to do? Davidson leads Wisconsin, who I had picked to lose to Kansas in the next round, 57-45. I like underdogs, and Davidson has already won a warm spot in my heart after they took Georgetown out of the tourney last weekend. I have a shot at winning the pool; a Wisconsin victory tonight would help that cause.
Sometimes, you gotta root with your heart, not your head.
Go Wildcats! (Had to use the Google to find Davidson’s mascot)
60,45, ‘Cats, 10:00 to go, 2nd half.

Leather Boots Are Still in Style for Manly Footwear

Race in Heels Trips Man on Workers Comp

Except, evidently, in Hartford CT.

Prosecutors say a video shows a Connecticut correction officer running a 40-yard-dash in women’s clothing and high heels _ at a time he had claimed he was too injured to work.

All this in a sincere, though misguided, effort to win Hannah Montana tickets. Is there nothing so over the top that people won’t do for these tickets?

And, nope, he didn’t win.

Bye, Bye Georgetown

Of all the teams I’m glad to see punched out of the NCAA Tournament, I rank the Georgetown Hoyas at the head of the list. Ever since their former coach, John Thompson, became the first US Olympic bball coach not to make the medal round, because he used the Olympics as a training camp for his pathetic Hoyas.

Thank you, Davidson!

New Header Graphic

I love folks who license their works via Creative Commons. From Flickr, and the kansasexplorer, the newest header graphic to adorn my shabby writing.

This is a picture of Nicodemus KS, a place a scant 50 or 60 miles from my hometown. I can’t adequately explain the significance of Nicodemus, so I’ll quote the Kansas Explorer, in his comment on the photo:

In the decades immediately following the Civil War, thousands of freed slaves were lured to the high plains states, often with lies about the wonderful weather and the rich land. One settlement of former slaves was Nicodemus, Kansas, seen from a distance in the photograph. It was difficult to eke out a living here due to the harsh conditions. Now nearly a ghost town with less than 25 inhabitants, Nicodemus is a National Historic Site, complete with a visitors center. An annual homecoming event draws hundreds of blacks back to their Kansas roots.

People used to come from miles around to what I heard was a great little BBQ/soul food restaurant in or near there. The lady that founded the eatery has since passed on; don’t know if it’s still in business. And, in my list of everlasting laments, I never ate there.
