NASCAR announces tree planting program at tracks – Trees to be planted for each green flag at Cup races

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing announced “NASCAR Green Clean Air” — a program to help capture the carbon emissions produced by racing. Under a pilot program that will expand significantly next year, NASCAR will plant 10 new trees for each green flag that drops during Cup Series events.

I think we found the new kings of the TWACs. But rather than be joyful at this finding, I too weep. :-(

  2. Okay, I will bite. What exactly is wrong with planting trees? I’m not sure why there would be any objection to it, no matter the motives. If someone convinced the male populace that tree planting had a Viagra-like effect, I would think they are gullible, yet enjoy the trees anyways.

I’m no biblical scholar, but I don’t get why Jesus would weep over a billion dollar organization planting 400 or so trees a year.

PJ: My life’s goal is to be a TWAC’s TWAC :) Thus far, I’d say I’m on track.

James, welcome back! There’s nothing wrong with planting trees; I think conservation and stewardship are important. I remain unsold on the whole “carbon footprint” idea, though. When NASCAR, which has enough problems (dwindling factory and major sponsor support, flagging live attendance at the tracks, and suspending drivers for violation of a drug policy that doesn’t state the banned substances, for starters), sees fit to trumpet some “Green Initiative”, I wonder where their priorities lie. That’s what precipitated the post title.

I’m sure the Lord is on-board with tree planting, and as I said, I don’t mind it myself. It’s just when large organizations like NASCAR trumpet their jumping on the Newest Bandwagon, I always suspect they are trying to divert attention from more substantive problems.
