Over the Hump

I have yet to flush the first spammer from the Akismet trap here in my new digs, but incoming links were hosed in the tank, due to my own inexperience ignorance when I set this blog up over a year ago.

Thanks to help from Dave, and a little further tweaking with the help of my new host and The Google, I think things are stable, and behave as they should.

I’m still concerned about feeds; I think I got ‘em all fixed, but I’m not sure. So, if you’re reading this via a feed that is still borked, you’ll never know. But herein lies the advantage of a small potato blog with a small but loyal readership like I have; if you don’t hear from me for a few days, you’ll actually stop by, knock on the door, and see what’s up. At least I keep telling myself that.

And the first flushing of the Akismet sludge filter will be proof that things are back to normal.

Tomorrow, sweeping the floor and turning out the lights at my old host, followed by the WP 2.1.1 upgrade.

Dumbass Spammers

Most of the spammers currently getting halted here at the tbbs-land doors by Akismet apparently think they’re spamming wikis and not weblogs. At least, if you’re going to be a dumbass spammer, use the proper tool to spam as it should be.

OTOH, Akismet doesn’t care what your target is. Trapped, and flushed, you are.

Thanks, Akismet.

Happy Birthday, You Wonderful Old Waste of Pixels Blog!

One year ago today, this old blog got off to a modest start. A year later, it humbly rattles on. I’ve debated about “branding” and such-like twaddle, and today it occurred to me: I am a mutt.

Yep, I like NASCAR, classical music, good single-malt scotch, a good cigar, Chevys, country music, escargot, pulled pork BBQ, pickup trucks, NPR, Coors or Bud, podcasts, and the occasional dip of Skoal.

So, I like what I like, and during the next year, I’ll share some of all of the above with y’all. OK?

I guess I’m supposed to render statistics, so here goes:

  • one year
  • 699 posts(not counting this one)
  • 1881 Akismet spam blocks
  • Modest numbers for a modest man. Keep showing up, comment when you’re moved, and life will be good.

    Double Whammy

We now mark an infamous moment: the Akismet spam trap reports stopping 666 comment spams. I’ll not speculate on any numeric associations here. Today, one comment spam got past Akismet, and hit the moderation queue. I get an email when something needs to be moderated, and my email spam guard flagged that email as, you guessed it, spam.

Technology is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

    Akismet

The Fat Guy has turned off Akismet Spam control on his blog, and reverted back to Spam Karma. Apparently, TFG has lots of spam cleanup to do, even using Akismet. Contrast that with Dave Slusher’s 99.8% success rate.

Pardon my interweb naivete, but I thought Akismet beats weblog comments against its database, and gives a thumbs up or down. If that’s the case, I’m amazed that two weblogs, both run by savvy operators, could experience such widely diverging results.

I’d been contemplating turning on Akismet here, but one false positive would represent a double-digit percentage of my readers, not to mention commenters. So, I’ll stick with my small-fry system for the time being.
