The Dancing Shoes are back in the Rack

I’m referring to the Big Dance, aka March Madness, aka the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament. My pool picks were in the dumper a week ago, and I frankly had little interest in either Ohio State or Florida, who played last night in the championship game. So SWMBO and I watched 24 on Fox.

As a fan if the game, I’m compelled to salute the Florida Gators, this year’s champion. It’s been since the early 1990′s that a team has won back-to-back college hoop crowns, and the Gators accomplished that feat last night. What was more impressive to me was that they were the first team in NCAA BBall history to win back-to-back championships with the same starting five lineup. In this day, when college kids turn pro at the drop of a hat1, it’s doubly amazing.

So congratulations, Florida. But next year “Beware of the Phog”.2

1 Or at the drop of several million bucks, and no I can’t fault anyone for that decision.

2 My Kansas readers will instantaneously understand this.

Elite 8

The Kansas Jayhawks won over the Southern Illinois Salukis 61-58, in a game completed just a few minutes ago, to advance to the round of 8 in this year’s NCAA Men’s basketball extravaganza.

Southern Illinois hails from the Missouri Valley Conference. Generally smaller school schools, going by enrollment anyhow. But schools from the Midwest, where there is no such thing as “give up”. And SIU proved that tonight, and came up a wee bit bit short.

I can now let my fingernails grow out for a day or two. Until Saturday ,to be precise, when the Hawks fly again.

Rock Chalk!

Nailing Threes and Making Laps

March is a great month. The NCAA basketball tournament and the roar of NASCAR engines have always been near and dear to my heart.

This year, it’s even better: I’m sitting atop my NCAA Pool after the first two rounds, and my Fantasy Racing team is still #1 in my league. I say this, not to boast about my enlightened prognostication prowess, but to mark a moment in time where my name is up in lights.

I’m gonna savor it while I can, because on Monday, it could be a fading memory.

Rock Chalk!

Congratulations to the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team on winning the Big 12 championship, in a hard fought, nail biting victory over the Texas Longhorns.

On to the Big Dance. If there is any discernment anywhere, on to the Big Dance as a #1 seed.

This is a great time of year; somewhere in the country, there is a team who will win 6 games in a row, and be national champions. As I see it, the Jayhawks have a great chance at doing exactly that.

However the tournament comes about, great drama is in store for basketball fans everywhere.

Winding Down

A beautiful day, weather-wise (57 degrees, clear, sunny), for the carpet guys, who completed their carpet removal, installation, and clean-up in 3 hours flat.

And they were here early enough that I could have and should have humped everything out of the POD, and back into the house. As it happened, a too early beer break, followed by viewing a Kansas basketball game, derailed that idea. Plus, the weather tomorrow is a magnificent “wintry mix”, highs around 40; I guess I figure I need to suffer some more. So, tomorrow, the rest of the POD gets cleaned out, rain/shine/snow or pestilence.

It’s a great feeling, though, to know that no other contractors are scheduled to show up for a good while.

880

Congratulations to Coach Bob Knight and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, on securing win number 880 for Coach Knight. The New Mexico Lobos, in spite of coming back from a 20-point defecit, came up short, and Tech prevailed, 70-68. This puts the greatest college coach ever to tread the hardwoods alone at the top of the heap, with the most coaching victories in Division I basketball.

To his credit, the Coach said in the post-game interview, I’ll paraphrase as best I can:

I’m glad this thing is over. This record belongs to any kid who’s ever worn a uniform at any school I’ve coached. It’s their record, not mine.

Amen, and Congratulations.

Now, back to the pigskin marathon. After I wipe away a few tears of joy.

History on Hold

Bob Knight’s Texas Tech Red Raiders lost to UNLV tonight, 74-66. The Running Rebs shot 48% or so from 3-point land; that, plus a pretty smothering defense, was the difference. Tech staged a furious rally with about 2:30 left, but got into a position of having to foul, and came up short. So, basketball history is deferred until 1/1/2007, when the Red Raiders face New Mexico, from the friendly confines of United Spirit Arena.

48% on three-pointers; a tough performance to beat.

One Away from Being The Dean

The Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball team defeated Bucknell 72-60 this afternoon. The victory gave the Raider’s coach Bob Knight his 879th coaching victory in Division I basketball, and ties him with the venerable Dean Smith for the all-time coaching win record.

And the best is yet to come:

Knight’s first chance to own the top spot all by his sweater-wearing self comes Thursday night at home against UNLV.

I’ll be watching, and rooting. I’m inspired by people who love what they do; I’m even more inspired when they rise to new heights.

The Faulkneresque Bowl

In trying to find my Kansas Jayhawks basketball game tonight, I stumbled across a football bowl game. I know nothing about the teams, Northern Illinois and Texas Christian, and am not disparaging either of them. Going to post-season bowls is a Good ThingTM.

They were playing in, take a deep breath, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

In San Diego, natch. NASCAR in all its glory hasn’t rendered a name such as this. Follow that name up with “presented by Ford Credit”, and you’d have the real deal.
