Congratulations, General

THe best college coach to ever tread the hardwoods coached his 900th winning game last night. Bob Knight’s Texas Tech Red Raiders were victorious over Texas A&M, 68-53.

It was fitting that the victory was over a nationally ranked team, and happened on Texas Tech’s home court.

Coach Knight had this to say about the win:

“You folks being here, seats being full for a change, really made a difference tonight,” Knight told the crowd before leaving the court.

Congratulations, Coach. Now on to 1000!

880

Congratulations to Coach Bob Knight and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, on securing win number 880 for Coach Knight. The New Mexico Lobos, in spite of coming back from a 20-point defecit, came up short, and Tech prevailed, 70-68. This puts the greatest college coach ever to tread the hardwoods alone at the top of the heap, with the most coaching victories in Division I basketball.

To his credit, the Coach said in the post-game interview, I’ll paraphrase as best I can:

I’m glad this thing is over. This record belongs to any kid who’s ever worn a uniform at any school I’ve coached. It’s their record, not mine.

Amen, and Congratulations.

Now, back to the pigskin marathon. After I wipe away a few tears of joy.

History on Hold

Bob Knight’s Texas Tech Red Raiders lost to UNLV tonight, 74-66. The Running Rebs shot 48% or so from 3-point land; that, plus a pretty smothering defense, was the difference. Tech staged a furious rally with about 2:30 left, but got into a position of having to foul, and came up short. So, basketball history is deferred until 1/1/2007, when the Red Raiders face New Mexico, from the friendly confines of United Spirit Arena.

48% on three-pointers; a tough performance to beat.

One Away from Being The Dean

The Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball team defeated Bucknell 72-60 this afternoon. The victory gave the Raider’s coach Bob Knight his 879th coaching victory in Division I basketball, and ties him with the venerable Dean Smith for the all-time coaching win record.

And the best is yet to come:

Knight’s first chance to own the top spot all by his sweater-wearing self comes Thursday night at home against UNLV.

I’ll be watching, and rooting. I’m inspired by people who love what they do; I’m even more inspired when they rise to new heights.

One for the Tie, Two for the Win

A big salute to Bob Knight, who coached the Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s NCAA basketball team to a 71-56 victory over Arkansas this afternoon. This victory brings the General one shy of the all-time Division I win record, currently held by Dean Smith.

I’ve always loved Coach Knight, and am delighted that the best coach ever to step on a basketball court is on the verge of making basketball history.

In his own words, the Coach’s post-game observation:

”Doesn’t mean anything to me,” Knight said. ”It means I’ve coached a long time. You guys think too much about records.”

And to Myles Brand, former president of Indiana University, who fired the Coach and subsequently went on to become President of the NCAA, where he’s bullying schools about “insensitive” logos and mascots:

Pfffffffft!
