The Brunch Bunch

One of the hoped for but not expressly articulated events of our trip was being reintroduced to our friends’ eldest son, his lovely wife, and their cute-as-a-bug’s-ear daughter. I had not seen their son since he was in diapers; it was inappropriate to go through my usual my how you’ve grown routine.

On Saturday morning, we were delighted to hear that they were dropping by to join us for brunch. We had a great meal; I forget the name of the place, but you can get red beans and rice with your scrambled eggs if you so choose. And an out of this world good Bloody Mary. I had the bacon omelette with cheese grits and biscuits … Good Eats. After I got totally aced out of picking up the check, eldest son’s lovely wife used her cell phone to snap this photo of the rest of us.

Front row, left to right: me, my little bride, eldest son.
Back row, left to right: Sue (Richard’s wife), my friend Richard, holding their lovely granddaughter. The little one goes by Pippy; her given name is Penelope.

Aren’t they a beautiful bunch?

The Out-of-Towners

We took a cruise down the Chicago River and out onto Lake Michigan on our recent visit. Our host had gone below to avail himself of the plumbing facilities and cash bar. So, my little bride and I did the classic touristy thing; we handed our camera to a fellow tourist, who was kind enough to snap this photo of us with the Chicago skyline in the background. The sky looks more threatening than it actually was; the sun was shining brightly when we boarded the boat; the cloud cover and breeze was welcome. As my hair thins, my head needs protection, and my Kevin Harvick racin’ hat was left behind.

Our friends have an obvious affection, if not outright passion, for the city and living in it. MLB and I are small town folk. But being shown around the city by people who actually live and work there was a treat. Our host and his wife have only one minor nit with the Windy City, and that’s that It’s not New York. In addition to the boat ride, we did a lot of walking around the city, and revelled in the architectural magnificence of it all.

I was glad the NASCAR events were held at night; we would have missed out on a lot of Chicago sightseeing otherwise. And there’s much more that we want to see; if we haven’t worn out our welcome with our friends, we will definitely make a return trip.

Search for America Tour, 2008

Tomorrow, we head west and a tad north towards Chicago. We’re visiting a college bud of mine, and his little bride.

Whilst there, we’re planning on attending the first night Nextel Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Like every trip, getting the electronics and spare batteries packed is always the biggest challenge. That’s done, and we’re down to skivvies and toiletries.

We are, in other words, ready to roll.

Updates to follow from the road.

For today’s running of the USG Sheetrock 400 from Chicagoland Speedway, the car-driver-channel list looks like this:

Dale Jr has reclaimed his channel 799 spot, and all’s well.

After Further Review

In the previous post, I linked to this, which points out that an arrest has been made in the case. An arrest. For “planting” LED caricatures of a cartoon character. From the article:

Peter Berdvosky was arrested in Arlington Wednesday night and charged under a recently enacted statute making it a crime to place a hoax device that results in panic.

OK, then, I’m glad Massachusetts has taken such meticulous care for the welfare of its citizens. My only question, is who panicked? Seems to me that law enforcement induced the panic, by closing roads, tunnels, subways, and parts of the Charles River, for crying out loud.

The suspicious device reports forced the temporary shutdowns of Interstate 93 out of the city, a key inbound roadway, a bridge between Boston and Cambridge, and a portion of the Charles River but were quickly determined not to be explosive.

The shutdowns were not “forced”; they were called by officials who didn’t have a proper grasp on the situation, and were unable to assess the gravity thereof. Seems obvious who panicked, given the following:

the devices have been in place for two to three weeks in 10 cities: Boston; New York; Los Angeles; Chicago; Atlanta; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; Austin, Texas; San Francisco; and Philadelphia.

The devices were in 10 cities, and only Boston “panicked”. Officials, arrest yourselves. As for me, I will be tuning into the Cartoon Channel.

To Whom Do I Complain?1

I sat down a couple of hours ago, all primed to watch Kansas Jayhawks basketball. They played the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago this afternoon.

SWMBO and I buy the ESPN Full Court package each year, at a cost of $100.00 or so for the season. That usually gets us our games of interest. Today, ESPN saw fit to broadcast the game on something called ESPN/U, also one of their channels. DirecTV wants another $12 per month to get ESPN/U, which is part of something they call their “Sports Package.” This package includes 24 or so Fox Sports Channels, any 8 of which are broadcasting the same game simultaneously at any given point in the day.

Not willing to extend our DirecTV plan, we listened to the game on XM Radio, and cringed as the Jayhawks went down to defeat today.

I don’t know if it’s ESPN’s or DirecTV’s policies that resulted in our not seeing the game on TV. It’s not even worth the effort to call either network. What I will say is that I’d be all for kicking TV out of my life entirely, if there were a way to view the following:

  • Prison Break
  • CSI Miami
  • Jericho
  • Friday Night Lights
  • In addition, I’d like to be able to see a few sporting events throughout the year. I’m even willing to buy a Mac Mini, or something comparable, and dedicate it to teevee watching. I’d lash up any kind of gear necessary to make that happen, and pull the plug on the whole bunch. For what we pay DirecTV in a year’s time, we have a good down payment on an alternative.

    Siderunnin’

Oh boy, oh boy! Via the postman, my copy of the Siderunners’ latest CD, Sabbath Country Sabbath, arrived this afternoon.

I ordered the CD and T-shirt from Failed Experiment Records in Chicago, way back on July 10, as noted here.

Early last week or so, I received an email from Mike at Failed Experiment; he said that the first shipment was returned by the USPS, with no mention as to why. I validated my address with Mike, and today, all’s well. And not only did I get one shirt, there were two shirts in the package. If this is lagniappe for my patience in waiting, thanks Mike! If on the other hand, I got two shirts in error, I’ll be glad to pay for the other one, SWMBO having already claimed it and all.

So, there’s a Busch race this afternoon, tonight is pork chop night. Thereafter, SWMBO and I will don our shirts, pop in the CD, and hear some great music. Review to follow.

The album liner notes reveal that this CD was recorded in an empty upstairs apartment in the house of a Siderunners friend on 9/3/2005. From the notes, pure poetry:

… as we positioned ourselves as best we could to get a balanced sound. We started drinking about noon and just recorded; no overdubs, no fixes, no fucking pitch correctors; nothing except wood, steel, and whatever the devil let us keep. This is a band playing together, warts and all. Treat this as if you were in the room with us, helping yourself to our cheap beer in the twilight of anonymous summer day.

Later tonight, I shall do that very thing.

    Siderunners Sabbath

My patience has been rewarded. A visit to The Siderunners website reveals that their new CD, Sabbath Country Sabbath will be in stores on June 27. That’s next Tuesday. Hot Damn!

The album is described as a “live acoustic record”, which will be a change from the Ain’t Inventin’ the Wheel, which is raw, high-energy country at its best.

I’m sure the new one will be downloadable, or available for internet order, on the 27th as well. Look forward to a review right here in tbbs-land after I’ve had a chance to give it a listen.

Read about the album release parties, and be slightly envious of Chicagoans who can attend, here.

I borrowed the album graphic from the ‘runner’s site; I only hope rabid fans with blogs are allowed this indulgence.
