I Really Shoulda’ Been There

This year’s CREATE South conference is underway in Myrtle Beach1. I had planned on being there this year; $DAYJOB provides the wherewithal to fund such an excursion, and I was up for a road trip. Unfortunately, $DAYJOB doesn’t realize:

  1. Project deadlines are not equal to the “Earliest date by when you can’t prove you won’t be finished.”
  2. You can’t get nine women pregnant, and marvel in the miracle of birth in one month.

That, combined with an unexpected drop in my PTO2 balance during MLB’s recent hospital stay, leaves me in the tbbs WorldHQ control room, following the proceedings via the Twitter.

I even restored my old Twitter account, so I could play along. I don’t embrace the Twitter for frivolous causes.

Enjoy, CREATErs! See y’all in 2010!

1 No, it did not burn to the ground, in spite of what you may have read. This does not imply that assistance is not needed for a large group of people in the area. Help out if you can.

CREATE Time Approaches

This year’s CREATE South1 Conference takes place on Saturday, April 25, in beautiful Myrtle Beach SC. Last year was the premiere event for this conference, which I referred to then as the free conference for the rest of us. This year’s conference is also free; and from the conference website, this statement of its purpose:

It is a meeting for those interested in blogging, podcasting, video, social networking or any other form of self-expression. Serving the residents of the Grand Strand and beyond, it is a venue to bring together like minded people to network, to teach and to learn.

  • I didn’t make it to last year’s event. This may be the year to reverse that trend.
  • I like Myrtle Beach; April is a great time to visit there, given that tourist season won’t yet be in full swing.
  • April will be a good time for another Search for America Tour.
  • Heaven knows I can use all the creative help I can get.
  • If all the above aren’t reason enough, I could just eat my weight in chicken bog.

I’ll run this by MLB; maybe we can make it happen. In the meantime, I’ll fly the CREATE South logo for a couple of months over in the right sidebar someplace.

CREATEsouth Readin’ and Watchin’

Thanks to all the Create South attendees for the Flickr streams, blog posts, and tweets about the conference. Though I had the desire, inclination, and wherewithal to attend, I lacked the open schedule time to complete the deed. I’ve read and watched everything about the event that I can find.

From what I’ve read and seen, the conference was well-attended, and without exception has met with positive reviews. I’ve lamented scheduling conflicts which precluded my Converge South participation for the last two of those. When Create South, 2009 rolls around, I plan to be the one with bells on at that one.

CREATEively Yours

Only two weeks until CREATEsouth, 2008. Still plenty of time to register for this free conference for the rest of us.

I’d be there myself; life has, for better or worse, intervened, and I’ll be watching from afar yet again. The rest of you, if you have any hankering to visit beautiful Myrtle Beach SC in advance of the tourist throngs, if you want to learn about the use of new media in scratching any communication itches you have, if you already, know your way around a blogging/pocasting platform and want to share that knowledge, go here and sign up. Or click the CreateSouth logo in the sidebar of this old blog.

All roads lead to Myrtle Beach, the conference is free, and I haven’t even mentioned the chicken bog.

CREATE South

Thanks to the internet, in the 21st century, anyone with something to communicate, whether by writing, audio, or video, has access to a free or very low-cost platform from which to expound. I think that there are probably more creators than there are platform users, because potential platform users may be intimidated by blogging, podcasting, etc because:

  1. They think it’s too hard.
  2. They think it’s too easy.
  3. They are overwhelmed by the magnitude of platform choices available.

In an effort to shed some light on these and other topics, the Grand Strand Bloggers, a band of creative new media producers, is hosting a conference named CREATE South in beautiful Myrtle Beach SC on April 19, 2008.

The conference’s purpose is succinctly stated by Dave Slusher, one of the conference organizers, in a press release announcing the shindig:

“We hope to reach those individuals who have an interest in new media
but are not sure how to begin. We appreciate the power of getting people of similar interests and
complementary skills in the room together to teach and help each other and to network. At the
end of the day, the goal is to reach the people who have work to do and a story to tell and need
just a little push to get rolling.”

So no A-lister navel gazing and swooning here. Just folks with creativity, curiosity, desire, who are willing to help each other out.

Sounds like a great thing to me. And I didn’t even mention two words guaranteed to motivate anyone: chicken bog.

PS: There’s a little graphic with a link to the conference in the right sidebar; it will be there until after the conference is over.
