The Fat Guy Speaks, Types, and Recommends

When Scott Chaffin recommends a new CD, not once, but twice, the latter with the 18+ point red font, boldface, I’m buyin’1. Hank III is finding its way to my music library as I type. All based on Scott’s blogging, and a couple 30 second samples heard over the last pre-commute cuppa’ joe this morning.

Reviews to follow. Probably Knob Twistin’ as well. Maybe both at once. Tomorrow night.

1 – Yes I got the explicit version. Old enough to want to, and fool enough to try.

Do not call him Gramps

Congratulations to Scott Chaffin, aka The Fat Guy, on the birth of his first grandchild. One observation from the article, as only TFG can phrase it:

And let me tell you — it’s weird being a grandfather. I’ve had about eight months to prepare, and I, uh, well, ain’t. Sort of perspectivizes things for ye.

Having been perspectivized four times myself, I can state for sure that it doesn’t hurt. I just wish my grandkids were physically close enough that I could see more of them.

And, I’ve thus far resisted all temptations to wear a striped jacket with white-belted plaid pants, which is somehow a lotta’ folks’ idea on perfect grandfatherly attire.

Woo-Woo-Woo-Woo

Over the weekend, what started as a simple misunderstanding and misreading of events by me nearly led to a meltdown, at least on my part. Over last weekend, I posed some innocent questions to this post on the Uplifter Weblog.

OK, people differ in opinions, they differ in all ways imaginable, and I thought nothing of the matter. Until, that is, I attempted to leave comments on James’ post/podcast, wherein he described how much he enjoyed SWMBO/he/I meeting for breakfast. The comment didn’t appear; so I tried again. Bupkis. The comment was not posted, acknowledged, nor was there any evidence of anomaly.

So, over to Dave’s place, to make my unoffical entry in the non-existent(yet) Rename iPodJuice campaign. Again, same result. No comment, no rejects, no errors.

OK, so to the Uplifter Blog, which I’m certain by now is at the epicenter of this little fracas, and enter the following comment, words to illuminate us for a long time:

Suppose I’m banned from here, too

Oh, yeah, that comment was swallowed up like the lost continent.

So by now, I’m convinced that this is gang-tackling of the worst order. By damn, I can take my ball and go home, too. I made my farewell posts here1, and was fully prepared to fold up this ol’ blog tent. In fact, March 3 was the “pull the plug” date here. But Tuesday morning dawned, and I decided to backup tbbs-land, delete it, and replace it with the very-web-0.92 “under construction” page from Speakeasy. And off to work.

This post from Dave Rogers was one of my first reads on that day. (I can’t find the permalink, but the post is entitled “Monday”). The overriding theme is “Know Thyself”. Read it. It rocks.

Tuesday mid-day, I get a call from Dave (Slusher, not Rogers). Akismet has unaccountably started identifying my IP address as that of a spammer, and dutifully, silently, and efficiently, sent my comments to The Bit Bucket at the end of the Internet. Emails from Dave and James when I get home. Comments are reinstated. Life’s good. I’m still loved.2

Later Tuesday, this ol’ place was reborn, with WP 2, and spiffy livery. And it’s back for as long as I can sit here and type.

“Know thyself.” Sometimes, that’s a hard thing to do. And from the Uplifter Manifesto, still ongoing:

The world is full of imperfect people and I’m one of them.

And I’ve totally left out the part about not immediately assuming the worst.

1 – Dave Winer couldn’t have made a better final post.
2 – And James and Dave are loved too. Akismet still periodically has problems with me; appears to be IP address related.

PS: Lotta’ Daves mentioned. The unadorned Dave refers of course to El Genio Diabolico. :)

Dueling Wreaths

Every year since Buddy died, we’ve had a Christmas wreath. The first one was a gift to us. After that, we’ve bought one, and have expanded the coverage to Nancy’s side of the family; her siblings, mother, et.al. Our daughter also gets one.

This year, we expanded the circle a little bit more, and here, in living color, is one of those on the front door of The Chair and Automan homestead.

I don’t know where Nancy got the little snowman stick figure that adorns ours. I just know I like it.

Saa-lute! #2

tbbs-ville was mentioned in the Getting A Leg Up Podcast today. The prior link is a direct link to the mp3 of the show; this is the podcast site. The show is hosted by Mark Forman, aka the Brooklyn Bluesman, aka The Reigning Shogun of Taiwan. Today’s pick hit song was “Rubber Bells”; it had me laughing; luckily, I was stopped at a long traffic light, and could concentrate on just enjoyin’ it.

I appreciate the mention – check out Mark’s podcast and blog; good stuff. I’ve never heard such a variety of music genres in a single show; yet it’s all cohesive.

Interweb Public Service Sunday

Well, I was all fired up earlier. I was prepared to offer incisive comments about PJM/OSM/Web 2.0/Tag Clouds/web.i.lic.i.o.us, but Scott, aka The Fat Guy, in far fewer, and much nicer words, sums it up nicely. And this little gem answers for me the “why do you do it?” question:

As far as monetizing this vanity website phenomenon goes, the best luck I’ve had so far is because of my writing about my crappy poker playing. And, because I love playing cards and chattering about it, I’ve met more people that I would genuinely call friends from the poker community than I ever have from any other online web-hippie endeavour.

And that is what makes this all great. Connections with real folks. Real people. Real friends.

A little ham (to break up the turkey diet), a little scotch, and then to bed. To work manana.

G’nite, all.

The AmigoFisher Blog

The AmigoFish blogs as well. Check out The AmigoFisher for AmigoFishin’ bloggy-ness. And I didn’t mention it in the first post, but AmigoFish is by Dave Slusher1 of The Evil Genius Chronicles Weblog and Clambake Fame, who started this whole AmigoFishin’ expedition.

No Sony for The Chair and Automan

James Slusher has some interesting views on Sony, and the boycotting thereof:

James mentions that he hasn’t bought an RIAA-label CD in years; I have bought precious few myself. I also use a Mac, having abolished MS Windows in my Y2K readiness plan. He goes on to say:

People are really upset that this big corporation turns out to be a soulless money vacuum. Who would have ever thought that might happen?

I think in this case Sony has crossed the line for even a soulless money vacuum by
1) The clandestine installation of insecure, poorly-written software, that they saw fit to cloak with a rootkit; some estimates are that this stuff has been installed on approximately 500000 networks around the world. CERT, and even DHS, have issued warnings and advisories.
2) Providing a patch to remove same; the patch contained as great or greater security risks than what they were trying to clean up.
3) Installing software that phones home to the Sony mothership when a CD is played, without adequate customer disclosure.
4) Possibly using some software licensed under the LPGL in their player.

And, then after a visit to Sony’s music site so he could see what he is foregoing, he offers this:

I figured that I won’t miss any of their artists. I haven’t missed them yet, have I?

I wholeheartedly agree. I do wonder, however why some legacy artists like Roy Acuff are on the list. Must be because of the new copyright laws passed a while back. I could live the rest of my life quite comfortably without any Sony BMG music.

And finally, James points out:

If we (as podcasters, listeners and consumers) do things right over the next few years, we can create a music business that rotates around more informed axes.

Right on! I’ve posted a lot about Sony, so that the few folks who stop by here might be better informed in the here and now. But we all press on towards the goals that James states above. And the day will come when Sony CDs will be used in 100% compliance with Sony’s draconian EULA, and that will be because no one is using any of them. A win-win.

Saa-lute!

Scott, aka The Fat Guy, mentions this humble effort of mine on his blog today. If ya’ like barbeque, beef, beer, and honest to gosh country music like it’s supposed to be, check him out.

Thanks, Scott, and a tip of the racin’ hat to you and yours.

PS: If the trackback doesn’t work, I’ll leave a regular comment at your place. I’m getting used to a lot of new web stuff; I’ll get there one day.
