Not Pokin’ Along

Frequent tbbs commenter and all-round good egg James Slusher is in Las Vegas this weekend, playing in the World Series of Poker Event #27. Via the Evil Genius Chronicles, an update on how he’s doing:

At the last check-in, the field had shrunk from 2700 to 600 and Jim had about an average stack. Something like the top 270 will get paid, so he was getting awfully close to the money. He hasn’t called lately so that has to be good news.

That sounds like a commendable performance to me. I went out to WSoP’s event website in search of more up-to-date news. All I could tell for sure was that there are now 350 left standing; I didn’t see James’ name in either the eliminated list or the chip count list. I don’t know what that portends.

So, James, if you’re still in the running, rock on! Try not to do any belly flops on the river, or whatever it’s called.

And Records Fall


I’m from Kansas. Growing up as I did on the Kansas-Nebraska border, I’ve been known to root for the Cornhuskers of Nebraska during football season.

Absence making the heart grow fonder and all, how ’bout them Jayhawks! The most points scored against a Husker football team, administered by a team near and dear to my own heart.

Thanks to a college friend, now from Chicago, for calling me whilst the game was still in progress. And thanks to Comcast Sports Net, for tape-delaying the game here, so I could see it. And thanks to NASCAR, for dropping the green flag on the big race tomorrow. In the Busch race, which I’d just got ready to watch, Carl Edwards clinched the Busch Championship, and Kevin Harvick won the race.

And to our good friends, Richard and Sue1, thanks for the heads up about the game! And the Chicagoland NASCAR race runs 7/12/20082

Happy Anniversary, Eddie and Joan!

Sometimes, your hometown paper renders good news. In this case, SWMBO and I read that my first boss and his wife are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Their actual wedding date is August 25, but when you get the paper at post office speed, and combine that with native sloth on my part1, the congratulatory greeting is made now. SWMBO will mail the card tomorrow.

I appreciate Ed & Joan for giving a young, dumb kid2 his first job. That humble start has taken me from coast-to-coast, and I never would have thought that in the early seventies. I figured I’d be selling Chevys by now, still living back home.

That wasn’t to be, and there are few regrets. I do miss small town Kansas life, though.

So, to Eddie & Joan, Happy Anniversary, thanks for all you’ve done, and best wishes for many happy returns of the occasion.

The text that appears below is the reason for the season; how much of this still applies? And who will write such a document when it becomes imperative to do so again?

I have no answers; just be safe, you all.

One Year Without the Acidman

June 26, 2006 was the day I learned of the death of the legendary blogger Rob Smith, the Acidman. I read his blog always, commented a few times, and grew quite fond of the crusty old guy, even though we never met. His blog is still up; it was his wish that it remain so. It is maintained via several volunteers, who reprise Rob’s posts from the archives on nearly a daily basis.

His was one of the few blogs I read not offering full-text RSS feeds; still is. I still subscribe, I still read daily, and have been treated over the last year to posts I’d already read, and to some I never got to whilst trolling his archives. Some of them still move me enough that I want to hit the comment button and add my two cents; the A-Man was famous for replying to commenters vie e-mail.

I think I expressed my thoughts in a comment to an on-line remembrance after his death:

Hmm, my trackback appeared not to track. I’ve not been this sad about losing someone I’ve never met since the death of Dale Earnhardt. Peace and comfort to Rob’s family and friends. Thanks to all those who put this online remembrance together.

Memorializing

Happy Memorial Day! A day off. Always a good thing. We’ve seen yesterday’s race cars, many in military service livery, roar around the track. President Bush has made the visit to Arlington, to adorn the Tomb of the Unknowns. All this is right and proper.

I don’t know anyone who has given up their life in service to the country. I don’t know a family who has suffered the loss of a loved one who died in service to their country.

So, I always take time out to remember my own friends and buddies who have passed on; my life is not as rich without them, and I note them here:

  • Terry Collins.
  • Van Plankey.
  • Dale Sunnquist.
  • Ryan Carver. 1
  • Dale Slusher.
  • Rob Smiley.

These guys, one and all, have enriched my stay here on earth, and I’ll never forget any of them.

Chief Morale Officer

I have a colleague, good friend, and beer-drinking buddy who returns to work today after a Caribbean cruise. For the last week, he’s dined lavishly, basked in the sun, and enjoyed delicious tropical beverages.1

He called me last night, to see how things are going at work. I assured him the place is the same cluster-eff it’s been since time immemorial, and that he would still recognize the place.

So, my and the workplace’s goal for today is to make him forget he’s ever had a vacation.

I mean, what are friends for, if not for encouragement?

Porktoberfest

That’s what I had for dinner last night, at the local Famous Dave’s. SWMBO, I, and another couple we hadn’t seen in quite a little while met for an early dinner.

Mmmm.. A perfectly sauced smoked pork cutlet, served with St. Louis style ribs, baked beans, drunken apples, and corn on the cob. All washed down with a few Bud Longnecks.

Good food .. good beer .. good friends. A nice evening made nicer by the fact it was their turn to buy.

Famous Daves has another special item called “The Pig Dipper”. Bacon, plus two other varieties of pork, on a bun, served with dipping sauce. Wish my workplace was close to one of these places.

Three Years, One Day

Sunday, September 14, 2003. SWMBO and I had attended church on Saturday night, and were rattling around the house on a calm Sunday. I was drinking coffee, watching NASCAR This Morning, and trolling NASCAR-related internet sites in an effort to squeeze a few more points from my Fantasy team. All of a sudden, an e-mail, the kind you don’t want to receive, from a friend in Texas:

Good Morning, Ken. I couldn’t find your home number. Please call me on my cell: aaa-eee-nnnn.

Messages like that are never good news, and this one kept the streak alive. I called the number to find that a mutual friend of ours in Kansas had passed away suddenly the previous evening. The friend who had died was Rob, my best friend, best man at our wedding, one year my junior. (Rob and I were good friends for a long time, even though we lived 1500 miles or so apart, and really didn’t correspond or call every week or anything like that. I think we both knew that if either of us needed anything, the other’s door was always open.)

I made all the arrangements to go back for the funeral. Airline tickets. Rental car. Hotel in KC. Friends to stay with in Northwest Kansas. All set.

The night before I was supposed to fly back, SWMBO awoke at midnight, clutching her chest, short of breath, and in severe pain. I helped her get dressed, drove her to the ER, and waited as the clock ticked down on my flight which was to depart several hours hence. And with the remnants of hurricane Isabel heading straight for us. It soon became clear that there was no way I was going to be there for the funeral.

SWMBO spent about 36 hours or so in the hospital, all tests were OK. Diagnosis: pericarditis. Frightening, painful, but not life threatening. I brought her home just an hour or two before the storm hit.

So, I wasn’t there to pay my last respects to a lifelong friend. There are priorities, and then there are priorities. I told SWMBO that Rob would come back and haunt me if I’d left her in the hospital unattended.

If Rob knocked at our door right now, the following would happen:

  • Handshakes and hugs, followed by the opening of the first beer.
  • Within a minute after that, he’d get a twinkle in his eye, we’d look at each other and smile, and we’d almost simultaneously blurt out “You old sonofabitch.”
  • After a few more beers, discussion would turn to all the dumbass things we did in our misspent youth.
  • We’d both point out how we wouldn’t take a million bucks for all those dumbass things, but wouldn’t give a nickel to do ‘em again.
  • So long, Rob. You’re still missed.

    Happy Birthday, Dave!

    Happy Birthday to Dave Slusher, major factotum at The Evil Genius Chronicles Weblog and Clambake, and all-round good egg.

    Dave’s late father and I were co-workers and friends. This circle grew to include SWMBO and Dave’s mom, and the four of us made numerous trips to financial improvement seminars horse tracks back in the day. I was tickled pink to see a link from Doc Searls to Dave a few years back, and I’ve been a loyal EGC customer since.

    Dave has shown great patience in answering my niggling WordPress questions as I got this blog started, but don’t hold that against him.
