West by God Virginia

As is becoming our custom, my little bride and I spent the Fourth with our friends in West Virginia. The grilling was done just as the skies opened to a steady rain. So the party moved indoors, and didn’t miss a beat. After the serving of the Independence Cake1, most of the local revellers went home.

That left our host and hostess, her daughter and SO, my little bride and me, to reduce the beer and liquor supply, so as to prevent its spoilage. The rain stopped, we went back out on the deck with our libations and had a great view of fireworks . We also solved the country’s energy problem and mortgage ills, amongst other pressing items.

I only wish someone had taken notes, so the results of our round table could have been preserved for posterity.

Safely back at tbbs WorldHQ, we’re now putting the finishing touches on our plans for the Search For America Tour, 2008, Chicago edition.

Santa in G-String Arrested on DUI Charge
In the Christmas oddities department, from La-La-Land:

A man in a Santa hat was arrested Sunday night for investigation of drunken driving after he was spotted outside Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood wearing a wig, a red lace camisole and a purple G-string, police said.

And, in a stunning example of police work, this observation:

“We are pretty sure this is not the Santa Claus,” Deputy Chief Ken Garner said.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t Christmas the way I remember it.

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth “

Merry Christmas to All!

Totally Missed “A Charlie Brown Christmas”

A Charlie Brown Christmas aired last night, I think it was, on ABC. I got home from work late, had to check out my POS work computer, brick-like in its lack of VPNness, and completely missed the show until it was about over. I’d seen no advance notice, or the Tivo would have been armed.

So, today, a trip out to the shopping mall that is the Internet, and we have the DVD coming.

Love the show, love the music. Even after forty-something years.

And the Hickory Smoke drifts Skyward

The turkey is in the smoker; an 11 pound specimen1 buttered, seasoned, and lightly stuffed with citrus, apple, and onion.2 The fowl is over a water pan, to which some wine and additional seasonings have been added. And the hickory chips and chunks are now working their magic.

It is a little windy for my liking today; it seems that I was always downwind from the smoke. Oh, well, it will turn out OK anyhow.

Now for some live booze testing, as we await the checking and reprovisioning of the water pan at 2PM or so.

2 No, we don’t eat that stuff.

Soakin’

Home from work, earlier than normal, but it still wasn’t like getting cut loose at 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Sipping a cold one, and soaking the hickory chunks for the turkey smoking extravaganza tomorrow. My little bride has cleaned the smoker, and lined the fire pan and water pan with foil. We just estimated that our smoking apparatus is around 30 years old; what it lacks in elegance has been more than repaid by all the good eats we’ve prepared in it.

Here is how we prepare our smoked beast.

Safe Travels

To all who take to the roads (or heaven forbid, the skies) today, please travel safely. I’m doing my part, I’m only going to work and back, and plan to spend the holiday ensconced here at tbbs WorldHQ. In that fashion, there will be one less vehicle adding to the congestion.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Christ is Risen!

He is risen indeed!

From the Gospel:

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
