Another The Game

I meant to blog this yesterday; the laptop upgrade intervened. In what is The Game for Kansans, expatriate Kansans, and fans of intrastate rivalries in general:

Kansans realize that this is The Game; back in the day, it might be the only game either team would win all season. Both programs have experienced an upturn in their football fortunes in recent times. Whatever the level of the teams, KU vs KSU is still The Game.

Autumnal Header Graphic

tbbs is graced by the photographic expertise of WSK_2005, aka Shawn Kinkade who got this beautiful shot of autumnal foliage at the Kansas City Zoo.

More importantly, Shawn made the work available under a Creative Commons license with the “free to remix” clause active.

I trust that my limited Gimp skills didn’t detract too much from the magnificence of the photo.

Thanks, Shawn!

Is it just Me?

Seems like every time I visit this old blog, the West Virginia University logo is in the right sidebar. There are three graphics that display, in some sort of random order.

No matter. Go Mountaineers! Except for basketball season1, in which case it is, was, and ever shall be Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

And maybe a clearing of the FireFox browser cache is in order ..

One Less Feed

With the new gig day one approaching, I’ve unsubbed my Jobs in Kansas City feed.

No point pursuing that now; my future Kansas years may be as a beekeeper, and perhaps a small time truck farmer.

Nothing wrong with that. For now, there are Linux servers to stand up and maintain.

Update: I’m still, always have been, and perpetually will be, for hire.

The Power of a Kansas Handshake

I haven’t blogged anything about this, but, for four years now, my little bride and I have been the proud owners1 of 40 acres of Kansas farmland in Jeffferson County KS. We found the realtor online, and made a trip back there in search of housing/building lots for our emeritus years. We only wanted enough land to build a modest house, with perhaps enough left for a sizeable garden, and maybe also a decent shed or other such-like outbuilding.

We actually got a lot more than that. The land, and the adjacent 52-acre parcel, on which we had the first option2, was and had been being farmed by a local man for cash rent.

The realtor gave us the farmer’s name, we got in contact with him, and met him in the Nortonville KS, city park. We agreed on a rent of $55/acre, I told him to treat the land like he owned it, we sealed the deal with a handshake. He gave us his check, and back to NoVA we went.

That was year one. Two hears ago, he called us and said that with fertilizer costs, and other such items, he could use a break on the rent. I asked now much, and he asked if we could settle for $45/acre. I said we could do that, and for two years, the checks came in at that rate.

During our recent first annual Bundy FunDays, another check arrived. There was a Post-It attached to the check, stating that he was raising our rent to $60/acre, and hoped that was OK with us. It was sufficiently OK that we deposited the check.

Where else in the country could business be done like ths?

Another reason I miss the Heartland.

1 Along with our banker.

2 We subsequently declined the 52 acres. Wanted it, didn’t want to be land poor.

Out of Uniform

To commemorate last night’s Kansas basketball triumph, I’m forsaking my all-black garb for one day only. Today, appearing in a shabby cubicle near you, will be an old man attired in a tasteful white polo shirt, with an understated Jayhawk embroidered on the left breast.

It’s the least I can do. My little bride will do her part by heading to her office pool’s betting window, to claim my winnings in that contest1.

All that, and a boatload of Red Hat systems to upgrade today, and a couple of Solaris boxen to jumpstart.

I’m tired already.

1 I know the amount of the winnings, and how much should be deducted for the entry fee she paid. Just for accurate accounting, you understand.

One Hour

Time left until the tip-off of the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship game. I’m 110% for the Kansas Jayhawks, while trying to remind myself that at some level, this is just a game. I just want to see both teams play their best; that is what got them both on center stage tonight. I still think college basketball is one of the finer forms of competition left, the NCAA’s and teevee’s efforts to turn it into yet another sideshow notwithstanding.

What other sporting event pits 64 teams against each other in a winner-take-all, single elimination extravaganza? Small school teams and large school teams have but to win six in a row, and cut down the nets and claim the trophy. And tonight, it happens. There are no Cinderellas on the court tonight; nevertheless, the drama will be intense.

And that part about just another game? It’s another game the same way open heart surgery is just another operation.

Seasonal Header Graphic

To commemorate the Kansas Jayhawks’ ascendance to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game, I thought it appropriate to adorn the old blog header. From the Flicker, and Jeff Croft, this panorama of historic Allen Fieldhouse.

I loved this description of Allen that Jeff posted with the picture:

Feels like the Lambeau Field of college basketball, to me.

Indeed. Even though Monday Night’s game won’t be played in Allen’s Friendly Confines, Memphis is well-advised to Beware of the Phog.
