Derby Day

As we prepare for this year’s Run for the Roses, my little bride and I are getting together the fixin’s for an appropriate beverage. That would be a mint julep. When I was in college, my roommate always said we should have juleps on Derby Day; we never got around to that.

I’ve told my wife on every Derby Day since that “Next year, we’ll make us some mint juleps.” And this is the year to do it. I stopped at the Harris Teeter last night and bought some fresh mint leaves1. We have the sugar and bourbon, and we managed to scrounge up some small silver cups that we’d had forever2.

There is no shortage of julep recipes available on the internet. The traditional one just calls for muddling the mint leaves and a little sugar in the bottom of your cup, then adding crushed ice and bourbon. Others recommend making a simple syrup, which gets added to the glass, along with the rest of the ingredients. I’m a traditionalist, so I recommended method one. My little bride said she’d get together a little syrup, so we could try both variations. She then followed that offer with the comment “I don’t want to get shit faced before supper.” Nor do I. It’s pork chop night.

1 I also brought home a supply of Shiners, which is an appropriate beverage in any venue.

2 Thereby saving $200 per cup on the purchase of silver julep cups, which we wouldn’t have done anyhow. Old fashioned glasses would have had to do.

How about that Barbaro!? He’s made a slow, steady recovery from injuries that would have been fatal to 90% or so of the horse population. He still has a way to go, and even though he won’t be on-track for the Breeder’s Cup this weekend, we can all salute this great competitor.

Maybe, just maybe, we’ll be watching the Son of Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby a few years hence.

Read the linked article; Barbaro was not the only one with heart and spirit in his recovery to date. Even though it’s sad, there’s still much to be thankful for.

Sad Day at Pimlico

Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner, and favorite in today’s running of the Preakness, pulled up lame shortly after the start of the race today.

NBC later reported that the horse suffered fractures above and below his right rear ankle, and is being taken to Pennsylvania for surgery. His racing career is definitely over, and there is concern for his survival prospects at this point.

I’ll confess to wiping away a few tears as they loaded him into the equine ambulance; he was still full of adrenaline, and wanting to run, hurt though he was. With a heart like that, I’m betting that he pulls through, and starts spending his time in the field with the ladies a little earlier than planned.

Derby Day

I always enjoy the Kentucky Derby, not that I’m any great judge of horseflesh. I’m not above dropping a few bucks on the ponies, and don’t get much of a chance to do it any more. SWMBO likes horse racing too, and as pleasant as her company is, women and men just bet differently. She can’t read a racing form; I can. I never notice cleverly-named horses; she does. I never notice the colors of the jockey’s silks; she does. She never bets to win; I do.

She and I and another couple or two used to go to the horse races quite a bit. Many of the male participants in these memorable outings have passed on, and I remember them all, even though I still miss them. Nothing like a friend with whom to order another beer, and discuss how our scientific picks went so wrong, while watching the women scampering to cash a $2 show ticket on some plug who was previously rejected by the glue factory.
