Brett Favre: Packers should let me play elsewhere
I’ve been an admirer if not an outright fan of the Green Bay Packers going back to the Bart Starr/Boyd Dowler/Max McGee days. News like that in the posted link always makes me shake my head. Favre, you’ve won Super Bowls, you’ve been an Iron Man at quarterback, you’ve faithfully and deservedly worn the mantle of superstar at a storied NFL franchise.
Please don’t blow all that in your latter days with whining and pining. Irrespective of your obvious dedication to the sport, you are a Packer. No matter what happens, you belong in the green and gold. Retire already. Run for governor of Wisconsin. Mayor of Green Bay. Congress. Buy a Chevy dealership. Whatever. Just retire.

They have a halftime lead, 20-7. During the second half, they could still get handed their stindeens in a paper sack, but for now, I’m a happy boy.

Update: And helmets off to Tony Gonzalez of the Chieves, for catching more TD passes that any other tight end to play the game.

With the NASCAR event out of the way for this week, I’m rejoicing in the fact that the early game of the CBS NFL doubleheader in our region features the Kansas City Chieves.1
We don’t see many AFC West games in these parts; even rarer is an appearance by the Chieves. They’re playing Cincinnati, a 3-2 team.
Even with the Chieves’ 2-3 record, MLB and I will be cheering them on like it’s the AFC Championship game.
Oh, and they’re playing at Arrowhead Stadium, too.2 It’s always great to see stuff from back home, and wish we were there.

Update: Cincy is only 1-3. Totally blew that one, didn’t I?

Chief Zee, the Washington Redskins’ mascot for the last 29 years, was absent from last Sunday’s FedEx Field season opener. He was in Dallas, at Texas Stadium, home of the arch rival Dallas Cowboys. It was for a good and noble cause, though:
Turns out he was in enemy territory — Texas Stadium — to honor the godfather of superfans, Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones. Crazy Ray died in March after 44 years of rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, and Chief Zee escorted Jones’s widow onto the field in Sunday’s pregame ceremony. It was only the second time in 29 years that the Chief missed a Redskins home game; the last was in 1981, when his father died. “The only thing that would keep me away was the death of my father or Crazy Ray,” he told us yesterday. “We became like brothers.”
Had I been watching the Dallas game, I’d have gotten choked up for sure at seeing the ceremony.

NASCAR and the NFL are a lot alike. I wrote here about the pre-game hypage for SB XLI. Not to be outdone, here’s the pre-Daytona 500 coverage, all times EST:
The FOX coverage also includes about an hour of pre-race hype; the green flag flies around 3:15. Also not included was ESPN2′s airing of the movie 3 at 8:00 this morning, as well as SPEEDtv’s marathon 70+ hours of broadcasting from Speed Weeks.
I plan to ass up and watch all the action on the new big teevee, and tune to one of the NASCAR HotPass channels (794 – 799 on DirecTV), to see a race as never before.
And, on this date in 2001, Dale Earnhardt was killed on the last lap of the 500. Another reason the racing’s not the same.

Holy Moley, there is lots of airtime devoted to pre-Super Bowl conversation, analysis, and hype: my digital teevee guide reveals the following; all times Eastern, use the TiVO to catch overlapping events, if you’re so inclined:
ESPN 11AM – 2PM Sunday NFL Countdown, with Chris Berman and the usual cast. CBS 12PM – 1PM Road to the Super Bowl CBS 1PM – 2PM Phil Simms All-Iron Team CBS 2PM – 6PM Super Bowl Today CBS 6PM – 6:25PM Kickoff Show CBS 6:25PM – 10PM Super Bowl XLI
One may only surmise that the ad rates increase as one traverses the list from top to bottom. And note the 9.5 hours of pre-game stuff for a 3.5 hour game.1
Oh, and don’t forget NFL Prime Time on ESPN after the game. And I’d also guess that QVC will have Championship paraphernalia for sale right after the game as well. No event is complete, no championship officially sealed without its own hat and t-shirt.2
Have Fun!

1 – I’m not complaining, mind you; I once watched 4.5 hours of NASCAR pre-race hype, before a 3 hour race at Homestead Miami. So this is not pot, kettle, black.
2 – NASCAR folks love them some hats and tees. So no gripes here, either.
I don’t bleed burgundy and gold, and if it weren’t for Joe Gibbs, wouldn’t care a fig for the Washington Redskins. But for Art Monk to be passed over in the NFL Hall of Fame voting yet again, just isn’t right.
Helmets off to the new inductees. Maybe Art can join them next year.

This morning, SWMBO and I took the plunge, outfitting ourselves with our first of the stage 1 Nicoderm patches before we left the house. And all in all, it wasn’t too bad. There were some immediate benefits; I was ready to leave the house at 6:45, as opposed to my usual 7:00, thanks to no extra coffee and smokes before leaving. It was nice not to have a bunch of smoking-related paraphernalia in my pants pockets. It was a great feeling to hear the guy in line at the convenience store say “a pack of Camel Lites”, and think “that used to be me…”. I was in the habit of putting a drive-time pack in the little catch-all on the driver’s door; it was wonderful not to have to do that.
I drank nearly a liter of water during the day, chewed more gum than normal, and ate some sunflower seeds. All in all, I made it OK for day 1.
I asked SWMBO how she did. She was fine except for the drive home, wherein she drummed her fingers on the steering wheel, applied hand lotion, etc. I pointed out that she could use the hand, now freed by not smoking, to make gestures to her fellow commuters, commending them on their extraordinary driving ability. She was not amused.
