Crises Near and Far

I’m in front of the teevee in tbbs World HQ, watching coverage of the Minneapolis bridge collapse. MSNBC’s coverage of the incident was reminiscent of old-time reporting, i.e., just the facts. Interviews with eyewitnesses, photos from local media outlets, and a noticeable lack of talking heads, experts, and pontificators. Just the news; tragic, but news.

Meanwhile, in the mid-level of our place, SWMBO is ministering to a neighbor lady, recently divorced, extremely depressed, who expressed suicidal tendencies when I answered the door just a few minutes ago.

This evening could go on a while longer.

Soap Opera in Real Life

And the story of sad sack Andrew Speaker continues to unfold. The poor mope has known about his tuberculosis since the first of the year, but he’s engaged to be married, and heads off to Greece 1 on his honeymoon or whatever.

On the way, we’ve seen DHS/TSA/Customs doing what they do best: pissing away taxpayer dollars, claiming that their screening process keeps us safe, when they can’t even stop one mope, with a presumably valid passport, who is flagged as not suitable to travel. Damn, I wonder.

And then, his daddy-in-law turns out to be a CDC microbiologist specializing in of all things TB.

Tearful apologies from Andy, and Diane Sawyer there to document the whole cluster eff for us.

In the unlikely event I ever fly again, what are the gel and liquid rules for carry-ons?

Man, this is gonna be a “news” story for a while. 2

2 How ’bout the rack on his missus. eh? At least in the photos I saw.

Final Ride, Biker Edition

The story of the Harley Hearse was picked up on the AP wire yesterday, and appeared on every news site I happened by. These conveyances are made by the Tombstone Hearse Company of Alum Creek PA, and feature a 19th century styled handmade coach, pulled by a Harley V-Twin trike. The hearse attaches to the trike via the 5th wheel method.

From Tombstone’s services menu:

At Your Service – With proper notification we can arrive at your service dressed in white tuxedo shirts, string tie, along with black pants, vest and shined boots with a single spur. We feel the uniform exudes nostalgic style and a sense of dignity and professionalism as we take the departed on their final journey.

I like the whole idea, even though I’m not a biker. Maybe enough to trade my final ride in the back of a Cadillac for such a send off. Not that I’m in a great hurry to ride in either anytime soon.

A Beehive of Activity

There’s a photographer at my brother/sister-in-law’s house now, taking a 3 generation picture of SWMBO, SWMBO’s Mom, and Elder Daughter.   This should have been a 4-generation picture, but Elder Granddaughter is still in school.

In addition, there’s a plumber who just showed up to minister to a recalcitrant toilet.  The plumber is giving sister-in-law the diagnosis now.

Everything happens at once, no matter where you are.

A Pixelized Mug Shot

Via Matthew Kappenman, pointage to just what I’ve been looking for. I want to display a picture of myself over in the right-hand sidebar someplace, but not just a photo. I want a drawing or caricature based on a photo of myself, that can also be smunched down into a favicon for the site. I had scouted out a place or two that offered such services, but held off pursuing any of them until I got the blog rehosted and back to a semblance of normalcy.

Then today, Matt’s post showed up in my feed reader, along with a link to Ben Rumback, who for the modest sum of $45.00, will take your submitted digital photo and:

  • Create a 5×7 water color painting from the photo.
  • Send you a mail-o-gram with a digitized version of the painting, to use as you see fit.
  • Send the physical painting to you via the Post Office.
  • How’s that for value? I’ll get SWMBO to take the necessary photo, and Ben and I will definitely be doing some business in the very near future. Thanks for the tip, Matt!

    Old. Older. Oldest.

Elder Daughter reached a birthday of some significance yesterday, 03.03, at 03.03.03 PM, according to SWMBO, who was there after all. The least significant digit of ED’s age is now a zero.

If I were the tacky sort, and if this old blog were like the small hometown newspapers, there would be a photo of ED, at age 2-4, with a header reading:

    Lordy, Lordy, look who’s

    And below that :

Insert age here (It rhymes with the above).

Since we aren’t tacky in the least, we won’t do that. tbbs-land, SWMBO and I, wish our lovely Rhonda Jean a very happy birthday, and convey our endless love to her.

    Another Potential Host Ruled Out

That would be Bluehost. I’d read several good reviews about them, and they’re right up there on a lot of rankings, for whatever good that does. Here’s the showstopper, which contains this little gem:

    Problem
How can I get SSH/Shell access on my account?

    Solution
Please fax or email us a copy of your drivers license, passport, or any valid government issue photo ID to (801) 765-1992 or to support@bluehost.com. Please be sure to include your domain name with the submission so we know what account to reference.

Nuts to ‘em. I’ll have a Gooooogle Account before I do that.

    The search goes on…

    Pat Robertson, Converted

Pat Roberston is now a believer in global warming. He says the recent nationwide heat wave has changed his outlook on the subject. He goes on to say:

This week the heat index, the perceived temperature based on both air temperatures and humidity, reached 115 Fahrenheit in some regions of the East Coast. The 76-year-old Robertson told viewers that was “the most convincing evidence I’ve seen on global warming in a long time.”

Atta’ boy Pat. Take one isolated data point, and formulate conclusions and policy from that. But please, spare us from any planned group hug photos with Al Gore.
