NBC wrap-up

The NBC Evening News with Brian Williams devoted several minutes of tonight’s show to big-stories-we-missed-while-we(NBC)-were-obsessing-on-Israel-and-Lebanon. In case you missed that, they mentioned:

  • The space shuttle Discovery landed safely in Florida.
  • Severe storms hit St. Louis; 500,000 without power.
  • Tsunamis hit Indonesia again; 20,000 homeless, 500+ dead.
  • An incredibly bloody week in Iraq.
  • Record-breaking heat sears the entire country.
  • There were others, but you get the idea.

Sheesh, I blogged about Discovery, Shelley Powers blogged about St. Louis (with pictures she took). The balance of the above were covered on NPR, as well as any number of news feeds to which one can subscribe.

The arrogance that NBC displayed in presuming they are the sole font of news is amazing.

    Thither the Siderunners

And the Siderunners CD is on the way, thanks to commenter Mike, who noted the following on this post:

Hey, the CD is available via direct mail-order from Failed Experiment Records. $10 including shipping. Will be available elsewhere soon as well, but just go to http://www.failedexperimentrecords.com and click on the web store!

I’m on order; an old-man sized, XL Siderunnners tee is on the way too. Love these internets!

    Linkers, Thinkers, Stinkers, and …

I couldn’t read them all, but I made it a point to seek out other blogs that were paying tribute to The Acidman over the last several days. I read comments, tributes, followed links to archives, and came up with this post from July 2003, wherein Rob expounded on his view of blogosphere organization:

I do like the idea of LINKERS and THINKERS on blogs. You have the godfather as the ultimate linker and he who thinks too much as the ultimate thinker. In between you have the STINKERS, like me.

The godfather is Instapundit, “he who thinks too much” is Steven Den Beste. Then, we have Rob and the rest of the stinkers.

It occurred to me that there’s another blog classification not listed above, and you are reading one now. Had Rob seen this place, he would have been compelled to add another category for blogs of my ilk: the CLINKERS.

    Thinking of the Scobleizer

I’m a heel. Following a public flushing of the Scobleizer from my feeds, I hear that his mother is gravely, terminally ill. Robert is at her bedside in Montana.

In one small slice of time, Robert has gone from being another echo in the chamber, to someone like all of us are: frail, human, vulnerable, and not at all in control of our lives.

One of my parents died suddenly; the other after a protracted illness. In both cases, I was just along, powerless to influence the outcome. But I had to be there with them both. I understand some of what Robert is going through right now, and am equally powerless to influence anything here. But I’m thinking of him, and wish him and his family strength and grace.

Robert describes getting the bad news.
    From that post:

How do you say goodbye? One hand squeeze at a time.

Those words should be taken to heart by all of us, and not just when a friend or loved one is at death’s door. We never know for certain if we’ll return home in the evening, after leaving for work in the morning. So just follow the advice, OK?

    Bizarre Enough to be True

KARK TV4, Little Rock reports that a doctor there has had patients’ records confiscated by “federal agents”. From the article:

Just over a week ago, agents with the Office of Inspector General served a search warrant on the office of pain specialist Dr. Brian Nichol.
Nichol`s patients, many of whom suffer from chronic pain, now say they cannot get adequate treatment without those records.

I don’t know what the “Office of Inspector General” is; in my experience, each agency has an IG. But whatever the source, it’s our feds at work all right:

Because the incident is still under investigation, federal agents are unable to comment about what they were looking for.

In absence of further details, I’d say they’re fishing with too big a net.

    Unbelievable

From The Agitator, a link to a Wall Street Journal article, behind the paywall, that makes this startling observation:

This spring, at least 65,000 undocumented immigrant students, many of whom have been in this country most of their lives, will graduate from high school. The Constitution guarantees a public-school K-12 education for every child in the U.S. But after that, their future is uncertain.

Whose Constitution? Looks like the venerable WSJ is just another BM1 rag.

    Your Own Optical Illusion

Remember those drawings that depicted two identical silhouettes facing each other? Viewed in one way, they were, well, two silhouettes facing each other. Differently viewed, the drawing was of a vase.

Thanks to one inspired individual and his company, you can now enjoy this phenomenon in 3-D. Turn Your Head will take a profile of your face, your child’s face, and make it into, using their terms, a pirolette. A 3-D rendering of the famous planar optical illusion. And, they’re available in a variety of woods: walnut, cherry, or maple. Finished with danish oil, followed by tung oil.

I thought on seeing the initial item, that it was a vase, or more on the order of a chalice, with the same properties. Pirolettes appear to be solid, but if the TYH folks read this, maybe a vase-like pirolette could be part of their future offerings.

Absolutely beautiful in any event, and not unreasonably priced, considering their one-of-a-kind nature.

Check it out: Turn Your Head1.
