Punchlines

A Clambake or two ago, Dave Slusher mentioned his disdain for the “repeat the story line thrice, and then the punchline” jokes. They are rather predictable, at that. So as a full-service blog, I present a couple of unadorned punchlines for your pleasure:

  • Look at those two assholes on that camel.
  • I’m calling Tiger Woods to ask him what is par on this hole.

    Feeding the Fish with Compadres

Stumbled upon a new-to-me podcast here a few days back. Compadre Records bill themselves as “Defining Roots Music”. They produce a podcast, called rightly enough, the Compodcast, wherein, again rightly enough, they feature their label’s artists. The artists include James McMurtry, Suzy Bogguss, Honeybrowne, and the legendary Billy Joe Shaver. Needless to say, Compadre is based Texas, specifically Houston.

The podcasts run the gamut from tracks by several of the artists, to interviews with one specific artist, to theme shows centered around holiday music.

I’ll forgive the Flash-saturated website, and their attempts to send you to iTunes to get the podcast. It’s good listening, IMO. With frequent music by Billy Joe Shaver, how could it be otherwise? And James McMurtry has some lyrically-powerful political songs at direct odds with what you might expect from country music.

To the AmigoFish to bestow the stars!

    The podcast URL is: here.

    Where’s my Transistr?

I’ve been making multiple daily visits to the Transistr website in search of The Podcatcher Formerly known as iPodderX. So far, no soap.

I want to start using a client again, instead of directly downloading podcasts. Being somewhat slothful, I don’t always get shows downloaded when I should, and this week I spent far too many days commuting to work listening to (shudder) radio.

Hurry up guys! No hard feelings about not winning the naming contest; I just need good stuff to stick in my ears.

    transistr

Actually, final vowel droppage and all, I love the name transistr for the podcatcher soon to be known as “the podcatcher formerly known as iPodderX”. Sheesh, look at the current iPX icon. I’m trying hard not to cop a sour grapes attitude here, but I never had a transistor radio quite as cool as the one in the icon.

Looking at the current icon, I’ve gotta commend whoever came up with transistr for h(is|er) retro-hi-low-tech cleverness.

I’m looking forward to the new software, so I can get my podcast downloading and listening on something approaching an even keel again.

    Fishy Logos

Only caught one keeper, but what a keeper it was. AmigoFish has a spiffy logo. AmigoFish is simple to use, and just might (read most probably will) find you some podcasts you didn’t know existed.

    It’s simple to Fish:

  • Listen to some podcasts.
  • Rate your podcasts at the AmigoFish.
  • Get some recommendations from the AmigoFish.
  • Stick those in your ears.
  • Repeat.
  • I’ll put the logo in the right sidebar when I’ve got more time.

    Salute to the Bluesman

The Brooklyn Bluesman dedicates a song to me in his podcast that I heard today on my way to work. It’s hard to drive and tap your feet. Even harder not to mash the gas pedal, being a NASCAR wannabe and all.

Can’t find/don’t know how to permalink to his blog post, so here’s the link to the podcast.

The Siderunners – 2o of separation

Yesterday, my NNW feed leapt for joy on receiving this full-feed post from The Evil Genius Chronicles. Anything with the word “Siderunners” in it gets my feet tapping. The Siderunners CD Ain’t Inventin’ The Wheel was the first album I bought after hearing them on a podcast; the EGC Clambake to be precise about the source.

After a brief “oh, shucks”, that I don’t live in Minneapolis, and can’t see them live, I made my monthly trip out the the Siderunners’ web site, in search of their much sought after, maybe even mythical, next CD. Once again, no new album. So from their site, to CDBaby, where I see that Ain’t Inventin’ The Wheel is out of stock for re-production. Good on the ‘runners, they sold ‘em all. Then at the bottom of the CDBaby page, I see this:

    Other Notes:
First ever grand champions of the Twang Off – www.twangoff.com

So to TwangOff :: A Battle of the Bands I go, and discover that TwangOff has podcasts. Five so far, all of which I downloaded. Great show! Live cuts from the battle of the bands performances, interviews with the bands, and some podsafe music I really liked.

A great thing about the new wave of music; even when you can’t find what you’re specifically looking for, you can find something you dig.

Now, off to AmigoFish to enter my rating. (Hint: lotta stars for this one).

    Evangelism, RSS Style

Several coworkers got shiny new iPods under the tree a few days ago, and several of them are using the word “podcast” in complete sentences now. Just a scant year ago, I was explaining podcasting to a small group during a post-work bull session. The consensus then was “I don’t have an iPod, so I can’t participate.” I explained that iPods were at optional item; evidently I was not clear enough, or persistent enough, in my explanation.

Now, though, I’m getting a lot of questions about how to find podcasts, what podcasts are good, etc, etc. The iTunes store has been a source of choice for several; they were already familiar with iTunes, and it was a natural progression to seek out podcasts there. If Apple did nothing else for podcasting, they certainly brought it into a lot of folks’ awareness.

Some with a little more podcast listening experience say they haven’t found that many that interest them. I mentioned they should check out AmigoFish. I explained the concept1, and told them to rate what they’d heard, get some predictions. Listen, rate, repeat. It really doesn’t take that long to get some decent predictions from AF.

Lastly, another coworker hacked up the Sage RSS reader FFX extension to automatically update subscribed feeds on on a user-specified time period. So, now I get asked, what do you subscribe to? What should I subscribe to? What can I subscribe to? My answer is “If you read any website on a daily basis, odds are they’ve got an RSS feed. Click the Sage magnifying glass, and it’ll find it.” They just can’t believe the ease of use, and love the fact they can follow more stuff in less time. And all without visiting the website. I’ll point out the virtues of full feeds to them later.

It says somewhere that a “little child shall lead them.” The last few days, in this limited arena, it’s been this grizzled old guy. I like that.

1 – Chief amongst this explanation was that the Fish is not some cheesy, hoked-up popularity rating scheme. Simple rating schemes abound, and have some utility for someone just starting out in podcast listening. Kinda like using WikiPedia as a springboard to better information.

    iPodderX now being redirected

The iPodderX website is now being redirected to Thunderstone Media’s site, which reads thusly:

    Our application’s name is changing!

We are currently undergoing a name change for the application formerly known as iPodderX. Both the application itself and the online podcast directory are currently unavailable.

Please note that the name change will not affect current users. The software should not be affected, and we can still be reached with support questions.

We will be releasing a new version of our software in early January under a new name, and our online podcast directory reappear as well. All current users will receive a free upgrade to the upcoming new version.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and we thank you for your understanding.

I wonder which of the names I submitted was chosen? More importantly, when do I get my winnings? Or should I just buy my own Nano? Decisions, decisions.
