I never knew this, but shipping items via UPS immediately after a long holiday weekend can be a pricey proposition. I just got back from Office Depot, where I returned an item to QVC1; a set of wind chimes to be precise. I think we paid around $20 for them; when they arrived, one of the tubes was detached, and there was no clear way to reattach it.
Anyhow, the cost to return them to the Rocky Mount NC returns center was a princely $16. I did a double-take, the Office Depot guy showed me the screen, and printed the label. It was then I noticed that it was being returned 3-day select. When I pointed this out, I was told that with a 3-day weekend, there was this backlog, and that 3-day select was the only option available; this is UPS’s way of clearing the jam. And then there’s that cost of fuel thing.
So, henceforth, I’ll keep this in mind when shipping items post-holiday. Whether or not the policy has any merit, it is what it is. You can’t fight Brown.

Man, what a great time of year. This afternoon, University of Nebraska football. A squeaker, 20-17, for the Big Red.
Tonight, the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 from Richmond. SWMBO and I had season tickets for RIR for a couple of years; Richmond is a great facility, and a highly recommended race venue.
As we age, however, we can’t stay in an $89/night1 Hampton Inn, and venture to a track in daylight, only to leave in the dark, and be at the Waffle House at 3AM for two nights in a row (Busch & Cup Race).
But aging has its benefits, too; tonight we have the Sharp AQUOS, DirecTV, and HotPass.
Not to mention, Corky’s ribs, imported via QVC. And Shiner’s. Mmmm … Shiners.
Enjoy your weekend.

Many times, SWMBO and I have made a major purchase, only to find the same or better product available elsewhere at a lower price. This usually occurs before we even get the purchase out of its box. So yesterday, when QVC presented a Sharp Aquos LCD TV identical to ours, I viewed the presentation with more than a little trepidation. The QVC price was 5 bucks less than we paid; QVC was offering 4 months easy pay. They also mentioned the high consumer ratings the Aquos has received. I feel very good about our purchase after watching the QC demo.
I’ll do a more in-depth review of the Sharp after we upgrade the DirecTV gear to provide HD input. So far, though, it’s an amazing TV, and we’re tickled pink.

Holy Moley, there is lots of airtime devoted to pre-Super Bowl conversation, analysis, and hype: my digital teevee guide reveals the following; all times Eastern, use the TiVO to catch overlapping events, if you’re so inclined:
ESPN 11AM – 2PM Sunday NFL Countdown, with Chris Berman and the usual cast. CBS 12PM – 1PM Road to the Super Bowl CBS 1PM – 2PM Phil Simms All-Iron Team CBS 2PM – 6PM Super Bowl Today CBS 6PM – 6:25PM Kickoff Show CBS 6:25PM – 10PM Super Bowl XLI
One may only surmise that the ad rates increase as one traverses the list from top to bottom. And note the 9.5 hours of pre-game stuff for a 3.5 hour game.1
Oh, and don’t forget NFL Prime Time on ESPN after the game. And I’d also guess that QVC will have Championship paraphernalia for sale right after the game as well. No event is complete, no championship officially sealed without its own hat and t-shirt.2
Have Fun!

1 – I’m not complaining, mind you; I once watched 4.5 hours of NASCAR pre-race hype, before a 3 hour race at Homestead Miami. So this is not pot, kettle, black.
2 – NASCAR folks love them some hats and tees. So no gripes here, either.
Dialing around the channels, I noticed that QVC is kicking off their 20th birthday bash. This means that SWMBO and I have been customers for nearly that long.
I think we still have some of the original items that constituted our first QVC purchase. They were a set of navy and beige bathroom towels, with duck figures woven into the terrycloth. We still have some left, because when we bought them, SWMBO delivered her explanation of the thinking behind the term show towels. I’ve been trained by the best.
