XM Radio Attractions

From the weekly XM mail-o-gram, this:

Twilight Zone #169: The Grave
Sonic Theater – XM 163 – 9PM ET
Before he died, notorious badman Pinto Sykes put a curse on hired gun, Conny Miller: if Miller sets foot on his grave, he will kill him – a threat Sykes plans to carry out. Starring Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, JFK, Sea of Love). Narrated by Stacy Keach.

Is this any kin to THE Twilight Zone of teevee fame? It’s on Tuesday, January 17th. I think I’ll listen, if for no other reason than to satisfy my curiosity.

XM Radio Memories

I listened to XM’s Sixties Radio (XM-6) last night. They featured some clips from old broadcasts from KOMA, 1520 AM, in Oklahoma City. I grew up in a small town on the Kansas/Nebraska border; this little town was home to a tiny 1000 watt AM station on 1530 AM.

As strange as this may sound in the 21st century, in those days, that 1000 watt station operated from sunup to sundown only. So after the hometown station signed off, we listened to KOMA, a 50000-watt station that normally came in very well. Listening last night brought back some great memories:

  • Radio ads weren’t insulting; you had the feeling that the advertisers were partners in the broadcast, rather than hucksters just trying to get you to buy.
  • There used to be an American car called Rambler. First car I ever drove was a Rambler.
  • They had neat little radio games; KOMA had “Name it and Claim it”. If you were the first caller who could correctly identify the currently playing song, you won yourself a copy.
  • Salutes to local high schools were prevalent.
  • The DJs created a sense of friendship; you felt like you knew ‘em.
  • Whatever happened to such things?

    XM Christmas goodness

XM Satellite radio sends a program guide via email each week, wherein they highlight upcoming shows. One show that will be airing on December 25 caught my eye; here it is from the email:

    It’s A Wonderful Life
    Radio Classics – XM 164 – 8PM ET
The holiday big screen classic returns in this hour-long 1947 Lux Radio Theatre adaptation. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed reprise their film roles of George and Mary Bailey

I was not aware there had been a radio adaptation. It’s A Wonderful Life is one of my favorite seasonal movies; I’ll definitely be checking out the radio version.

    FM Radio Dead at 65

Yep, just heard it on an XM Satellite ad. It’s probably been dead a few years longer than that.

What was funny, though, was the last line of the ad: “The memorial for FM radio will be attended by its two terrestrial station owners.” Funny, in a sad kinda way.
