O Holy Night

Luke 2:

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And that’s the way it was, dear readers.

Merry Christmas.

Let’s Do Something, Even if It’s Wrong

Ten minutes into the Candidates Forum on Service presidential forum now airing on MSNBC, and I’m wondering whether or not the title of this post might not be a more fitting theme.

McCain just spoke; I assume Obama is next. McCain just heralded the creation of the Department of Homeland Security as a landmark of reform of government, and bipartisan cooperation. McCain gasses on, after the break, but I doubt I’ll be able to discern much difference between the two.

Guess what? I don’t give a rip for either of these mopes. I’m not afraid; I wasn’t afraid on 9/11, and I’m not now. If a storm bears down, MLB and I will provide for ourselves as best we can, and we’ll help out our neighbors, again as best we can. I need no government to encourage me, subsidize me, or offer their dubious notion of “help”.

In other words, Leave us Alone. The vast majority of people in the United States are capable of the same thing; neighbor helping neighbor, the way it’s been forever. It can’t be mandated from above, at least not by the Washington bureaucrats. It comes from a calling outside of each of us, and yet obviously of a plane somehow different than the one we’re on. Some of us call it Christianity, some a religion that’s not Christian.

It all boils down to this; every religion has some notion of the Golden Rule. Those who are atheists have a compass that guides them to something beyond; I call that something God; they don’t. The strong truth of the Golden Rule crosses these boundaries.

And if I’m on the receiving end of help, I won’t ask about the caregiver’s religious affiliation. Nor will I preach to those whom I’m blessed to help. Obama has yet to speak; like McCain, you have no need to incent, if that’s even a word, behavior that’s beneficial to all.

Service is its own reward. To everyone, just because.

He Died for All

I’ve never written a Good Friday observation, but I think it’s time.
He Died for All.
Not just for people of any particular political or ethnic persuasion. For All.

Not just for those in any particular social stratum. For All.

Not just for those in any particular country. For All.

Not just for those whom you consider best buds. For All.

In particular, He died for:

  • Osama Bin Laden
  • Timothy McVeigh
  • Adolph Hitler

I can’t from my own strength do anything about my own abject failure to live as He wants.

I can do nothing about the people for whom He died; I’m just thankful He died for me.

Grace. What a beautiful thing.

Sunday, we rejoice!

Christ is Risen!

He is risen indeed!

From the Gospel:

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

The Pageant of Peace

The 80th annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree takes place on the National Mall tonight. The President will light up the tree, and several musical artists will perform.

I’m all for peace, but this thing bothers me; there will doubtless be religious trappings of every religion but Druidism(though the tree itself may cover that), inspiring to few of any religious persuasion, and ignored by those that don’t believe. Or it will be devoid of any religious reference, and be merely a feel-good winter festival.

In either case, why bother?

Steers and Queers

The Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau has established a website to extol the Big-D’s virtues as a destination for visitors of the gay and lesbian persuasion.

From the website, emphasis added:

Dallas continues to propel itself forward, now a richly diverse American city with a melting pot of cultures, religions and lifestyles. It has left behind stereotypes of big-haired women and rowdy cowboys — that is, unless you count sassy drag queens and strapping gay rodeo champs.

I didn’t realize Dallas was such a haven. From this article:

“It’s not about being politically correct, it’s about being economically correct,” said Phillip Jones, president and CEO of the tourism bureau. He said gay travelers spend an average of $100 more per day than other travelers and plan four to six trips a year.

The greenness of the money has no gender or gender preferences. A market has developed, and it’s being served. I just thought it queer that Dallas aspires to prominence in it.

Pat hits the Ground Running in 2006

CNN.com – Robertson suggests God smote Sharon. I hate to be one of the gazillion posts on this topic today, but here we go anyhow. Pat Robertson is at it again, claiming that Ariel Sharon’s stroke is “retribution from God”. I’ll just let his statement stand on its own merits, except that it doesn’t have any.

What really bothers me is the association of Pat with Christianity in the minds of lots of Americans. I’m a Christian, and definitely am not part of the Pat Squad.

My Bible goes on for a good long way past the book of Leviticus, and reveals some wonderful things. Maybe Pat should give his Bible another look; or if he wants, I’ll send him a complete version.
