The Tea is Dumped

The Tea Party ’07 fundraiser for Ron Paul having come to an end, I’ve replaced the TP banner with one for downsizedc.org, an organization promoting the simple and not too outlandish premise that the U.S. Congress should actually read legislation prior to voting.

From the group’s mission statement:

We believe the federal government has grown too large, too intrusive, and too expensive. We believe in constitutional limits, small government, civil liberties, federalism, and low taxes.

I can’t disagree with that. The presidential candidates get a lot of press, and there’s a prevalent belief that the occupant of the White House controls our destiny. Actually, the president is an executive; he carries out the legislation passed by the Congress. This means that the president is nothing more than an errand boy for Congress; he derives no special powers simply by being president.

That’s at least how it’s supposed to work. Congress has ceded major authority to the executive branch by blindly passing laws to create executive bureaucracy after executive bureaucracy.

It’s time for a change; instead of caring about who occupies the White House, let’s focus attention on the Legislature.

It still can’t hurt to support Ron Paul.

How Not to Support Your Candidate

Via the Evil Genius Chronicles, a post documenting Ron Paul’s visit to Myrtle Beach. I was sorely tempted to comment on Dave’s observations, and ask for further elucidation of his remarks. Then, a commenter named Matthew made these artless observations:

I beg you to explain to me why you dont agree with Ron Pauls beliefs? You show me one candidate that is honest and supports principle the way Ron does.

Ron Paul is the salvation. You can try to throw all the propaganda towards. Your website sounds ridiculous. Why dont you place a big Russian Red Star next to the title.

Anyone not supporting Ron Paul is an unpatriotic, socialistic Bushite !
Followers of the revolution are the true Patriots. Wake up to reality!

My stars, Matt, if you really support Ron, you should realize that such ham-fisted tactics aren’t going to convince Dave or his readers; most likely, they will alienate people who before were either uninformed about RP, or who were on the fence about him. In non-political situations, I have been in the presence of loutish people who were wearing apparel sporting logos for some university, product, or what have you; while I don’t remember the persons today, I can safely say that my perception of the lout’s school/product/whatever went downhill.

I support Ron Paul; I’ll cajole, exhort, blog, and defend him. If someone disagrees, fine. I think it’s time for a major change in the way America is governed, and I think RP, long shot though he may be, speaks to the changes that need to be made. I’ll not post anything anywhere like you did, Matt. It’s time to write and talk, not to call each other names.

And, as for an unpatriotic, socialistic Bushite, I think my intracranial phrase parser needs a firmware update to handle that one.

Appearing in a Sidebar Near You

On the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party on December 16, Ron Paul supporters are being encouraged to pledge money to Paul’s presidential candidacy. The goal is 100,000 subscribers, each pledging $100. Donations to be made at the Ron Paul official website. For the first time in a long time, in my recollection, comes a candidate who stands for small government, for freedom of the individual, and for letting the  an American citizen  march  to the beat of his/her own drum.

That man is Ron Paul. The sidebar has this graphic as well; I’ll leave it there until after the Tea Party. I may even sign the pledge1
