Flyin’ the Colors Early

No doubt about it this year; the Pittsburgh Steelers are my choice in the Super Bowl. It’s no secret that I’m an AFC fan, so the Steelers get a +1 right out of the gate.

Still, this is the used-to-be-hapless Arizona Cardinals’ first shot at the Vince Lombardi Trophy, and it wouldn’t be the end of the world if they were to win.

On the plus side, there’s no one from New England or New York in this year’s big game.

And that alone makes it seem like a victory already.

Yeah, team!

Obligatory SuperBowl Weekend Fandom

I never thought I’d wave the banner for an NFC East team, but I’ll be rooting for the New York Giants tomorrow. I like them partly because of their underdog status and partly because a bunch of my and my little bride’s coworkers are Giants fans.

I like Eli Manning; I like his dad Archie, and Peyton is OK in my book as well, even though the Colts aren’t in the big show this year.

Still, I can’t muster much enthusiasm. I plan to snack hugely, and have a six pack truckload of Shiners.

Happy Super Bowl Weekend! Go Giants! Yea, Team!

Super Bowl Hypin’

Holy Moley, there is lots of airtime devoted to pre-Super Bowl conversation, analysis, and hype: my digital teevee guide reveals the following; all times Eastern, use the TiVO to catch overlapping events, if you’re so inclined:

  • ESPN 11AM – 2PM Sunday NFL Countdown, with Chris Berman and the usual cast.
  • CBS 12PM – 1PM Road to the Super Bowl
  • CBS 1PM – 2PM Phil Simms All-Iron Team
  • CBS 2PM – 6PM Super Bowl Today
  • CBS 6PM – 6:25PM Kickoff Show
  • CBS 6:25PM – 10PM Super Bowl XLI
  • One may only surmise that the ad rates increase as one traverses the list from top to bottom. And note the 9.5 hours of pre-game stuff for a 3.5 hour game.1

Oh, and don’t forget NFL Prime Time on ESPN after the game. And I’d also guess that QVC will have Championship paraphernalia for sale right after the game as well. No event is complete, no championship officially sealed without its own hat and t-shirt.2

    Have Fun!

1 – I’m not complaining, mind you; I once watched 4.5 hours of NASCAR pre-race hype, before a 3 hour race at Homestead Miami. So this is not pot, kettle, black.

2 – NASCAR folks love them some hats and tees. So no gripes here, either.

    Go, Colts!

I guess it’s time to weigh in on the sporting event of the weekend. I’m an AFC West guy (except for Denver), and would be beside myself if the Chieves were in the game. But they aren’t. So my AFC loyalty extending as it does to everyone but Denver and the Jets, and since my Dad was a big Colts fan (They were in Baltimore then. Dad talked often about The Game, Colts-Giants in 1950-something), I’ll say…..

    Go Colts!

    University of Nebraska Football

Texas vs Nebraska now showing on ABC, from the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The snow flurries and cold weather have to favor Nebraska.

What I’ll never understand is why ABC announcer Brent Musburger feels compelled to call every play as though it is happening in the second overtime of a Super Bowl. I will, however, forgive Brent his excitement on the 60 yard TD pass that just occurred, putting Nebraska into the lead 7-3 in the first quarter.

    Go Huskers!

    How to Win at Football

Score a few touchdowns. Just ask the Washington Redskins, victorious for the first time this season 31-15. The first time this season, including preseason. I know it was against the Houston Texans, but still, they won.

Being an AFC West guy in an NFC East world, it means little to me. But, come tomorrow, the airwaves will be full of “the Redskins are back” kind of talk.

Don’t make Super Bowl plans yet, guys.

    Mick Rolls On

SWMBO and I just watched the Rolling Stones’ halftime show from SuperBowl XL. She has had a herniated disc for the last 15 or so years, and it has acted up again, so she’s been going to sports therapy to get that lined out. Minus a few aches and pains, she’s doing much better. After seeing Mick prance about the stage, she said “If he can do that at his age, I should be able to put up with my aches and pains.”

Me, I couldn’t get over the fact that many in the cheering crowd of girls were young enough to be Mick’s granddaughter.

    Superbowl XL

I’ve got that beat, I could be an XXL with no effort whatever. The no effort being what got me in contention for XXL-dom from the git go.

UPDATE: Yep, I will be watching the game. I have it on SWMBO’s authority that tomorrow is chicken-fried steak night.
