The tbbs Blimp

Some bloggers post cat pictures. Some bloggers post video clips. Some bloggers podcast. Some bloggers post recipes.

Here at tbbs-land, we have our own blimp, pictured to the right. I’d just arrived home from work the other night, when I saw this heading toward Dulles airport. I have no clue whose blimp it was, I didn’t have the angle to get a side view. But I had the trusty Razr, and snapped this pic. I think this was my first sighting of a blimp in the wild.

So, don’t be surprised if you are watching the Rose Bowl next January, and hear

Today’s aerial coverage provided by the tbbs blimp Monarch.

What Gives?

I was just poking around the Big Networks’ sites, looking for video of James Brown’s final arrival at the Apollo. CNN wants me to download Windows Media Player, while MSNBC, with close ties to Microsoft, is perfectly happy using Adobe Player. I’ve been Microsoft-free at home since 1999, and that includes MS plugins, applications, and everything else. CNN can go pound sand.

What a turnout at the Apollo, for the Godfather’s final sendoff. I was surprised, pleasantly so, by this article, which said that the late singer’s body was driven from the Georgia funeral home to New York. An all-night trip. Somehow, I think that befit the man, and the way he lived his life.

Welcome Home, Atlantis

Space shuttle Atlantis is safely back on terra firma. Those night landings are spectacular, especially so after a nearly perfect mission.

Once again, NASA TV was awesome; they had pictures of the heads-up display from the flight deck, without the overhead of the talking heads on the major networks. That heads-up display reminds me of a video game, at which I was consistently terrible.

Welcome home; I give thanks for a safe and successful mission.

A Song from the Acidman

I’d volunteered some excess tbbs bandwidth to host some of the late Acidman’s songs. There were plenty of volunteers, and my offer of bandwidth still stands for whatever tributes his family, friends, and loyal minions see fit to organize.

In the interim, I’ll try my first embedded audio in a post, and leave you with some pickin’ and singin’ from Rob Smith, the Acidman his own self; this one is entitled My Door is Always Open:

Dale Earnhardt Day

Today, April 29, is Dale Earnhardt’s birthday. Also the 5th Annual Dale Earnhardt Day, where his legion of fans celebrate his life and times. From the DEI website:

MOORESVILLE , NC – Organizers at Dale Earnhardt, Inc. have confirmed that celebrations honoring the life and legacy of Dale Earnhardt will take place at Dale Earnhardt, Inc., on Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Dale Earnhardt will be honored and inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on April 27 in Talladega, Ala. The Busch Series race will be held on Dale’s birthday, April 29th. In honor of both events, this year’s theme will highlight Dale’s incredible track record at Talladega International Speedway.

Dale Earnhardt is the winningest driver at Talladega with 10 trips to Victory Lane during his illustrious career. His 76th, and final, victory occurred at the 2.66-mile superspeedway on October 15, 2000 when he roared from 17th to first in the final laps.

One of the activities at the observance includes this:

Record Your Favorite Dale Earnhardt Memory

Recall a special Dale Earnhardt moment and what it meant to you, on video. Your memory will then be added and archived in Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s historic, multi-media library.

This is a great thing; Joe Fan’s point of view, preserved for all time. Very cool.

It doesn’t say so here, but Dale Jr, will be driving a black Budweiser Chevrolet in tomorrow’s running of the Aaron’s 499 from Talladega. That will be a lump in the throat moment for this race fan.

Internet Child Porn Ring Busted

From CNN, 27 charged in child porn sting. I read the article, and of course the story was all over the evening TV news. I’ll spare everyone the totally disgusting details, which the press seems to delight in presenting in their faux-somber voices. Suffice it to say, if the charges are true, that the perpetrators deserve what’s coming to them. I’ve heard that even in the Pen1, there’s a certain code, and swift justice is often dispensed toward such sickos as these.

This isn’t the point of this post, however. In watching the TV coverage, and reading the article, I was amazed at how often the Justice Department mentioned the internet technologies, including peer-to-peer filesharing and streaming video, which were used in the perpetration of the crimes the government alleges.

So now the point: will it be the DOJ, or Congress, who will attempt to introduce some type of draconian, unworkable scheme to prevent or detect such uses of the internet? My money is on Congress, it’s an election year, and some type of knee-jerk-off response would sell well back home. If they want to go for the daily double, Congress will ask DOJ what DOJ needs to be effective in fighting this type of crime. The answer to this last part is clearly nothing; using the means and methods they currently possess, Justice was able to crack the case, and arrest 27 people. I doubt the powers that be will see that in such clear light. Be warned. You read it here first.
