Should I Laugh or Cry?

From local ABC affiliate WJLA Channel 7 Weather:

What was thought might be a mostly freezing rain event for the DC area has turned into the most significant snow of the season. Winter storm warnings extend through early tomorrow as snowfall totals of 2 to 5 inches and in some area up to 10 inches are expected. A changeover to sleet, freezing rain, and eventually all rain should occur later today as milder air arrives from the south. Indeed, tomorrow is expected to see highs in the 40s under mostly cloudy skies.

Looks to be a scraping or shoveling event. In either case, I’ll need the liniment.

Update: I’ve had to take the broom to brush off the LNB on the satellite dish twice in the last two tours. From the pixelation I’m currently seeing, the third time can’t be far off.

Cold, Icy, and Aching

Those are respectively appropriate adjectives for the weather, the streets, and my old body this morning. The temperature is in the teens, side streets have some residual effects of the sleet, and I spent more time on the business end of a snow shovel than I’d have liked.

I scooped out SWMBO and me, then retired to the house yesterday morning. Around 4:30 in the afternoon, she pointed out that a neighbor’s house hadn’t been scooped out yet. He’s gone for six weeks to warmer climes, and we’re looking after his place in his absence. The wind had been blowing all day, and the snow had hardened considerably, but I got his sidewalks shoveled off. During the process, I managed to crack my snow shovel, but it held out until the job was done. My body did, too. Barely. And today, I’m paying the price for being an attentive neighbor. I gotta find the liniment.

Niner

Or fiver, depending on which internet thermometer I’m viewing at the time. I see the tbbs-land sidebar weather eye registers 9; that’s supposedly straight from Dulles Airport. No matter which one is correct, the wind chill translates to sub-zero.

Fortunately for me, I just have to make it from the house to the car, and from the car to the office. The dry, cold air doesn’t do much for one’s skin; my legs itch in this kind of weather, from being cold and dried out. A little Gold Bond will be in order before leaving this morning.

Don’t worry about the brass monkeys; we got them off the lawn last night.

Update: According to the TV, these are some of the region’s coldest temperatures in ten years.

Winding Down

A beautiful day, weather-wise (57 degrees, clear, sunny), for the carpet guys, who completed their carpet removal, installation, and clean-up in 3 hours flat.

And they were here early enough that I could have and should have humped everything out of the POD, and back into the house. As it happened, a too early beer break, followed by viewing a Kansas basketball game, derailed that idea. Plus, the weather tomorrow is a magnificent “wintry mix”, highs around 40; I guess I figure I need to suffer some more. So, tomorrow, the rest of the POD gets cleaned out, rain/shine/snow or pestilence.

It’s a great feeling, though, to know that no other contractors are scheduled to show up for a good while.

Happy Thanksgiving

From Hot Springs AR, where SWMBO and I arrived tired and crabby yesterday afternoon. A good night’s sleep, and excellent weather, and we’re much better now.

I’m posting this from the blog’s admin interface; a first for me. I’m also using my brother-in-law’s Windows powered machine to post. I’ll try not to make the Windows thing a habit.

Happy Thanksgiving, and safe travels to all.

University of Nebraska Football

Texas vs Nebraska now showing on ABC, from the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The snow flurries and cold weather have to favor Nebraska.

What I’ll never understand is why ABC announcer Brent Musburger feels compelled to call every play as though it is happening in the second overtime of a Super Bowl. I will, however, forgive Brent his excitement on the 60 yard TD pass that just occurred, putting Nebraska into the lead 7-3 in the first quarter.

Go Huskers!

Fair Weather Fan

America’s pastime, baseball. I’ll admit to being the fairest of fair weather baseball fans, not because I dislike the game, but because being a true fan is really work. There are so many games over such a long season, that it becomes a job (at least for me) to follow box scores, who’s hot, who’s not, who’s injured, etc, etc.

Come playoff time, though, everyone’s a fan, and I’m no exception. So I thought I’d better post up the colors of my team for this year’s playoffs and World Series: the St.Louis Cardinals.

I think I’m at 80 percent or so

At least in regards to this list, entitled 25 Signs That, Sadly, You’ve Grown Up. Some ones that hit me where it hurts:

You keep more food than beer in the fridge.

6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.

You watch the Weather Channel.

And #25, which just finishes the job:

You read this entire list looking desperately for one sign that doesn’t apply to you and can’t find one to save Your sorry old ass.

(No) Labor Day

I haven’t done squat since arriving home Friday evening, unless football and race watching count. SWMBO is under the weather, so I’ve tried in my crude fashion to minister to her. I updated a few little programs on my PDA, and that’s been the size of it.

But isn’t Labor Day a weekend off? I thought so.

Happy day to all who have today off, and thanks to all those who work this weekend; your efforts enable the non-working populace to enjoy their time off.
