Advent is Over

And on XM Radio, or at least on XM via DirecTV, classical Christmas carols. I’m listening, as I perform my spontaneous combustion abatement exercises in the family room. In the spirit of the season, lyrics from an excellent carol:

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

XM Radio Live requires Borgware

I signed up for XMradio’s Online feature earlier today. I wanted to experiment with it and Audio Hijack Pro. After I sign up and click “Listen Now”, Firefox informs the that “Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page.” I click Install Missing Plugins.. after which I’m solicited to download Windows Media Player. Ain’t happening – I’m Microsoft-free since Y2K, and plan to stay that way. I guess my XMradio captures will happen another way. Lucky I have plenty of paper to go on the drawing board.

XM Radio This Week

A monumental event, Saturday 4/22, featuring the greatest band ever on the face of the planet (IMO anyhow):

Buffalo Springfield: Rhino Anthology
The 60s – XM 6 – Saturday 11AM – 1PM ET / 9PM – 11PM ET
In early 1966, the chance meeting of Stephen Stills and Neil Young spawned Buffalo Springfield, a short-lived, yet highly influential 60s folk rock group. Hear the songs, the collaborations, the live gigs, and the rough times.

XM Radio this week

Keeping in mind the remote control and the operation thereof, this is a free service, provided for informational and show avoidance purposes:

Oprah & Friends

Oprah & Friends will debut in September 2006 and will feature a broad range of original programming from Harpo Radio, Inc. including regular segments hosted by popular personalities from The Oprah Winfrey Show and O, The Oprah Magazine and an exclusive original weekly half-hour reality radio show with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King. The channel will be broadcast from a new state-of-the-art XM studio at Harpo Studios in Chicago.

In addition, NASCAR abounds on XM-144. Sheesh. Hype. Let’s race, OK?

And, lastly, a legend on February 17:

The Triumph of Sam Cooke
Soul Street® – XM 60 – 5PM ET
Soul Street’s Leigh Hamilton talks with Peter Guralnick- author of the book Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke – about the record industry mogul and his great successes in the music world.

XM Radio this week

First of all, golf:

AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-AM
The PGA TOUR® Network – XM 146 – Thursday to Saturday Noon to 6PM ET
Live from California’s Pebble Beach Golf Links, Phil Michelson defends his championship at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-AM, with coverage Thursday to Saturday Noon to 6PM ET, and Sunday 1PM to 7PM ET.

Many people enjoy golf; I’ve watched it on TV several times. Those soothing golf announcer voices make a perfect background by which I can doze off. I should sleep like a baby with this, except that I plan to be following Daytona qualifying action at the time.

And, a new beta service:

XM + Napster – Beta Release

It all adds up: the pioneer of digital music downloading plus America’s #1 Satellite Radio Service means it’s no longer just about listening to music. Discover. Download. Play what you like, when you like. We’re talking unlimited access to your favorite XM Radio Online music channels and Napster’s catalog of more than 1.5 million songs, and the ability to download them to your PC. A whole new way to experience music, intensified and grown to infinite proportions.

Try XM+Napster for FREE at napster.xmradio.com

This one merits a look-see at least.

FM Radio Dead at 65

Yep, just heard it on an XM Satellite ad. It’s probably been dead a few years longer than that.

What was funny, though, was the last line of the ad: “The memorial for FM radio will be attended by its two terrestrial station owners.” Funny, in a sad kinda way.

Clap for the Wolfman

Gotta love that XM Radio. The 60′s channel (Channel 6) has Wolfman Jack at 9PM ET. Info from XM here.

Growing up on the Plains of Kansas, I didn’t become familiar with the legend of the Wolfman until my early 20′s. I know he’s passed on, but thank heaven for tapes, and his Official Website.

“Have Mercy, Baby”.

Big Day

This is the day that XM Satellite Radio begins supplying the music on the Direct TV music channels. I just checked it out, and it’s there and working. First song I heard: “If You’ve got the Money, I’ve got the Time”, by Lefty Frizzell. Just a hi-tech plowboy, I am.
